Help me replace my 1/4 panel

first i cut out the section above the wheel well to check out the damage.


to get to those spot welds at the bottom,i cut out the part where the side scoop was to fit my drill in.they are hidden under a layer of caulk/sealer.i used a wire wheel to remove it.


got it out and cleaned up the area.



i'm going to try to bang out the wheel well first,if i cant i guess im going to have to replace that aswell.

Got 2553.00 from the ins.

spent 120 on the 1/4 panel,165 on a welder and air body saw,and another 70 on supplies.

trying to get it done for under 550.

If that looks good when you're done, you'll be my new hero! Now I'm really starting to thing hard about the 99 body swap! I can have an almost complete 99 body brought out to my house for 500 bucks! So I'd be able to take my time and remove the quarters.

banged out the wheel well today.looks pretty good




this section looks to be old damage,i'll try to straighten it out a little more tomorrow.


i've got a question for all the body and paint guys out there.
what kind of sealer do i use where the panels meet?
and where can i get some?

tomorrow i'll finish wire brushing the edges to bare metal.
than i'll test fit the 1/4 panel.

yesterday i wire brushed the paint off the replacement 1/4 panel where it will be welded to the car.

i also trimed the top,behind the sail panel,right now it's really close to the welding stage.just needs a little more trimming.

here i test fit the panel,lines up really good.it's just clamped in as of now.

today i'm taking the day off from working on it,maybe tomorrow i'll get it done

now that's how you replace a rear quarter panel. and i know it's not set in but the top part of the gap on the door looks a little wide in the third pic.

yeah i see it.

today i got some welding clips,small enough to hold the panel in place and close the door to check the alignment.

also got some butt weld clamps to hold the panel togeather behind the sail panel when i weld it.

tried to get a spot welder attachment for my welder,but both harbor freight's in town are out of stock

thought about getting the spot welder that looks like a big pair of tongs,but i cant justify spending $200 on something i may never need again.

i guess i'll just go really,really slow and do it by hand.

any tips out there?
i never replaced a 1/4 panel before,although it seems to be going good so far.
i can use all the help i can get.

When i shaved my antenna and filled in my holes for the emblems I practiced welding on the bad fender...

Its called seam sealer comes in a caulk tube... its ****ty... get it at any auto store...

Just dont go over the top with it... its not "sandable" as advertised lol paint stripper melts it if you do go overboard...

ok,i think i got it.
today i fit the 1/4 panel to where i'm happy with it.
the door gap looks good,so does the 1/4 to trunk lid.got it clamped in and the panels are all flush.

these pics are with it all assembled.tomorrow i'll be welding it in,and if i have time,sealing the seams,sanding and primer.

i'm going to buy a spot welder,$150 at harbor freight.i'm not too good yet with the welder.with the spot welder,i'll be sure to get strong welds so the panel wont fly off while i'm driving

it's not perfect.the gap at the top of the door is just a TINY bit closer than the bottom.but,it's something i can live with.

not too bad for my first time,i think.

wow i think if you can replace that quarter panel, you shouldn't worry about painting the panel. you have to get the right paint, invest in some tools, do the prep work right and take your time. way to go.

I vote that you can weld this in with your wire feed welder.

My welding skills suck too... BUT I welded in my own subframe connectors without problem, sjhaved emblems, did some rust repair... just practice a little but on the old panel and you will be able to do this no problem....
