I am looking for a good mod path to follow. I just purchased my first 5.0. It's an 89' GT. The exterior is in great shape, it's just needs some muscle to back it up. Right now the car has:

bbk shorty headers
catless h pipe
flowmaster mufflers
underdrive pulleys
richmond 3.73's
auburn posi unit
and edelbrock upper and lower intakes.

I need some recommendation on what to do next. I am not really working with a tight budget, but I would still like to keep the cost pretty reasonable. The ultimate goal for the car is to have a nice mid to low 12sec streetable weekend racer. Any suggestions are welcome.

Tons of ways to go.

Give a budget to us. Against nitrous?

GT40 intake, AFR heads, B303 cam, 70mm TB, mass air sensor + 36lb/hr injectors etc.

-or-

Turbocharge what you have right now. My 94 GT went 12.50 on the stock motor with a T-70 and intercooler. The only mods were an FMU, fuel pump and MSD with boost retard. Later I went with a 355 stroker, Twisted Wedge heads, turbo cam, Accel DFI, and on and on...

I would like to stay away from nitrous if at all possible.

The turbo idea is definitely something I have been thinkingabout as I just came from a 2004 STi, before that a 2002 WRX, and Eclipe GSX

Turbo/SC is a good way to go to make a ton of power off the bat..But I would also consider laying the ground work out first, Good heads, cam, port the edel intake, fuel sys., subframe connectors, good adj. upper/lower controll arms, etc...etc...That way when it comes time to add the Turbo/sc/nitrous, you will be able to take full advantage of it, and put that power to the pavement! As they say...cant build a mansion on a toothpick foundation! Good luck

I would def. like to do some supporting mods before I go ahead and add some sort of forced induction. Would going to to a 306 or something like that help me to get down into the low or mid 12's without adding a sc/tc?

306 would be good, but why not buy a stroker kit and stroker clearence it yourself. 306 forged rotating assemblies are as much as 331 or 347 stroker kits. So I don't see why you wouldn't want go with a stroker it. My advice is build from the bottom up, any good engine builder will tell you that.

You can add some heads and a cam and have 12 second power.

Some TFS or AFR heads and the right cam is all it takes.
