I was driving down the highway and I went to press the gas and there was nothing there and it just died.
I pulled over, it turns over but it won't start.
I can hear the fuel pump constantly running with the key in the on position. It usually only runs just a little when I first turn the key to the on position.
Does this mean my pump is shot?
I just had a new Holley in tank pump put in last year. 192 or 195 lph, can't remember exactly.
I even pressed the gas to the floor, and pumped it also, there's no smell of gas in the engine bay. I believe it's not getting any fuel.
Help!!!!!
It's getting towed right now.
Thanks

Additionally, when you get it home, just check your fuel pressure, spark and injector pulsing.

Good luck.

funny thing, my car did the EXACT same thing today except i could let it sit about a minute and it would start up and sit there and idle really rough, then when u tried to rev it up it would sound like it was misfiring, then i shut the car off and waited and could get it to rev up past 2 grand and it would be fine until u tried to let it idle back down and it would die. Called a tow truck and he towed me back to my house, rolled it off the truck hit the key, and it ran fine, i don't know what the hell happened to it, maybe an electrical part got too hot or something. It's an 87 mustang gt 5.0 5 spd, MAF conversion, all the sensors on the motor have already been replaced, replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter bbk headers and H-pipe, flowmasters. Any idea what could have caused it to die? it was running great all day then all of a sudden just like u said, it wouldn't take any gas what so ever. I let it sit on the side of the road and i could get it to start but it would idle rough for about 10-15 seconds then just die and wouldn't start back up.(also when i first bought the car the fuel pump was bad and it wasn't getting enough fuel:10lbs matted to the floor:)

I checked the fuse.
It's fine.
Clogged fuel filter? I had a new one put in Jan. 2006
Would it be the pump? Because it's continually runniung?
It's a 190lph Holley. Would a pump go that fast?
I just had it put in last year.
If I have to replace it, what brand and how many lhp would you guys reccomend for my set up.
Thanks
Any other ideas on what could be wrong would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

TFI module on the dizzy. my 92's went out.. did the same thing.. just road along down the road and it suddenly died. had to pull over and get er towed. Thats my guess

It's going to take some testing on your behalf to figure it out. We can guess as long as we want but it doesn't help you track down your issue.

I would suggest using Jrichker's checklist to run down the systems. Some key points in the diagnostic pathways are checking for fuel pressure, spark and injector pulsing (why I mentioned them before).

Good luck.

I have fuel pressure, 39psi with key on. Though the fuel pump runs constantly. It should cycle for 3-5seconds and shut off after it builds pressure. Computer or sensor problem?
Checked the MSD TFI Blaster Coil and got a low reading from neg. primary terminal to the secondary terminal( the one that the distributor cap wire goes to) it reads 3.5 ohms, should be 8.0 to 11.5k ohms)
I put my old coil on (reads almost 8.0) .Still didn't start.
Changed my MSD ignition module. Put my old one on. It still doesn't start.
Checked all under dash fuses.
My car is at the garage, just down the road from me.
Hopefully they can figure it out.

Most commonly the problem... I've also had this happen.

But, you need to make sure your getting or not getting spark to the injectors, dizzy etc...

Use a screw driver to stick into the plug wires and set it close to a ground. Then crank the car over. Have a friend to see if it arks.

The pump not shutting off is likely a grounded neg FP relay coil wire. It has the ability to be grounded at the self test connector to help diagnose issues (so you dont have to cycle the key 500 times). I'd see if that wire is staying grounded after about 5 seconds of turning the key on. FWIW, the puter has no idea what the FP is - it just lets the pump prime for a few seconds.

If you do have spark, put a test light biased across the electrical connector to the coil. While cranking, see if you have a flashing test light. You should. If not, look for 12 volts to the positive coil wire with the key on. If you have it, then think TFI issue.
If you also dont have injector pulsing, think PIP.

Good luck.

My MSD distributor complete with billet, TFI module, cap and rotor is new, put in last Feb. 2007. Swapped my old TFI ignition module (which worked fine before) with the new MSD ignition module. It did not make a difference.

Also swapped my MSD TFI Coil blaster with my old TFI coil (which worked fine before) still nothing.

The pump not shutting off is when the key is in the on position, car not running.
Hissin, I don't understand the part about the FP (what's FP?) negative relay coil wire and testing it.

Also, Just talked to the guys at the garage.
THERE IS NO INJECTOR PULSE!

Hissin, what is PIP?

Thanks for all the help!

PIP is the sensor in the bowl of the distributor. It tells the computer what cylinder is about to fire so the puter can send a signal for spark and injector pulse. ANd when the key is on and the PIP is in action (the engine is turning over), it makes the fuel pump run.

FP = Fuel pump (or fuel pressure if 'fuel pump' doesnt make sense. :rlaugh: ). The way the fuel pump relay works is that the computer sends the ground signal to the relay's coil. This excites the relay. Normally when you turn the key on, the puter sends the ground pulse for 2-5 seconds and then it removes the ground. This is why the pump primes and stops. If that ground wire from the computer gets grounded/shorted, the pump will run anytime the key is on. You are able to do this yourself with an extension of this same ground wire, which is located in the self test connector. I'd check that wire's continuity to ground to see if it seems to be grounded.

There's a decent chance the PIP crapped out. Though not very common, the TFI can fail in such a way that it blocks the PIP signal from going through it on the way to the computer. The shop very well might measure PIP output (Ford uses an inverted signal IIRC) to see if the PIP is working. That should tell the story.
