Better hope the air bag control box doesn't start beeping.
I'd put the bulb back in.

If i remember correctly you were looking for unmolested well kept cars.
Doing things like removing a bulb is something homer simpson would do to the car (via electrical tape over the check engine light). Not a good way to start.
Fix it right or it will forever be on your mind.
Why buy a great car and start rigging stuff from the get go?

The air bag system probably didn't like the low load draw of the led. I know as an electrician that some switches and timers won't recognize leds because the power draw is too low.
I see no reason it couldn't happen in a car.

I'm trying to learn more here and always do caution. So LEDs draw less load and are brighter, and doing this swap is completely safe??

Less draw is usually good, especially on old electronics with mediocre wiring.

Not sure what his issue was, but i think no bulb at all should cause the airbag control to beep. Similar to a broken bulb.
So in theory (it's just a theory) an led may not provide enough amperage draw to complete the circuit, and the unit may not think there is a bulb in there.
Again, i'm not totally sure how the system works, but i removed my airbag control box because it wouldn't stop beeping after i took the bulb out. Mind you the airbag system was connected to my fox engine harness which i no longer have or i wouldn't of done it.
