Had a problem with the car dying as soon as it got started-replaced ignition switch, fixed it temporarily. Now when I start it if I hold the key in place it will run but as soon as I let it go back it cuts power and dies. It appears to be electrical, I can see the tach go to zero and hear the fuel pump shut off when I let the spring return the cylinder to the run position.
Anyone had this happen? What do I need to replace to fix it?

Could be the ignition switch.

Isn't the ignition switch the cylinder and key I just replaced? If not, what and where is it?

You need to remove the lower dash pieces that cover the steering column. The ignition switch is down there. Its a rectangular shaped electrical piece with a narrow gray plug. Look for the big yellow wires going to it. What you've replaced is the ignition cylinder. The switch is altogether different.

Yup, what ss93cobra said. Lower right side of steering column, close to the dash. The part is about $12 from Ford. you will also need a tamper proof torx bit (T-27 I think). You can get it at NAPA etc. There was a recall on these switches, but I don't know if it went back as far as 87.
