HELP! Will a 225/45/17 tire fit on a stang?

Looking at some wheels 17x8 but they come mounted with a 225/45/17 tire. Right now I just have the 3 spoke stock V6 2000 rims on my car. Will this wheel and tire combo be the same size as stock, or slightly bigger? I dont think I fully understand the tire measurement guide. I thought 45 was for 4.5" of the measurement from the rim to the end of the tire and the 17" was just for the rim it would fit on. Someone please correct me if I am wrong. I dont understand where the 225 comes into play.

ur tires should fit with no problem at all. might need a few wights though. tire place will do it for you

Hey thanks for the quick replies. So with the stock GT that has a tire size of 245/45/17, comparing this to the 225/45/17, I am guessing that the wheel diameter is the same but the width of the tire is wider on the 245 compared to the 225? Thanks.

225-245, i think that is the distance in millimeters. So you should pick up 20 millimeters (2 centimeters) of rubber. Every bit helps.

2 inches to the pavement, you will have a bit wider sidewall too though, but not sure how much wider.

i have 275's in the rear in and they fit, so you should be fine

just wanted to make sure the diameter of the wheel plus tire will be the same or extremely close to stock so my speedometer isnt thrown off

Your aspect ratio should be what determines the accuracy of your speedometer, so if you want your speed to match, then match that ratio. But you will have to re-evaluate the aspect ratio of your stock setup, as to your new 17" wheel setup to determine correct speed.

i did some searching and found this neat tool http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html to compare stock to aftermarket sizes. shows if i go with these tires, and the speedo shows 60mph, actual speed will be 58.8. thanks to everyone for all the help.

a 225 will fit on an 8 wide but it will look like total crap and not protect the rim edge at ALL i dont know where people get the idea that certian tires that are obviously to small will work good on a certian size rim.... i just got a set of 03 chrome cobras 17 by 9 with 255s they look decent but one of the rims got curbed and is mesed up and the tires look far to narrow, i put on my new 275 wide tiers today and MUCH MUCH BETTER, if thats what they come with fine but save up and get some 245-45-17 tires at least.

i`m running 275-40-17`s on all four corners with plenty of clearance on my 98
