I got an engine from a friend today that i will be useing in my 65 and im trying to find out what size it is. The emission sticker on the valve cover says its a 1974 302 but how can i be sure.
I did manage to get the casting numbers but everywhere i search i cant match my numbers to anything.

any ideas?

casting #s D90E-6015-E3A
or E
or B
I cant tell.

D9OE-6015-E3A will be a 79-84 302 block. What heads and intake are on it? If the motor's completely stock, I hope you didn't pay too much for it. At best, it's got 150-175 hp, the higher being an 84 HO engine with a 4bbl carb.

Based on the valve cover sticker, it could have been a short block bought in the early '80s to replace a stocker in a '74 something-or-other.

Yea, either way he's got pretty much of nothing , most likely. Possibly a good block, crank & rods for a foundation. The rest? that depends on what's there.

Like I said previously, you've got a good block, rods and crank to use in a build up, as long as the block hasn't been overbored too much, & the crank hasn't been turned more than 10/10. Rods? Yea it's just got the std. run of the mill 302 rods likely, which aren't bad, just have em resized and install a set of ARP bolts in em, they're plenty tough with good bolts. (and yea, they're forged too) Just rebuild it with a set of 1.610 pin height flat topped pistons ( cast, forged, or hypers, depending on how hard you want to beat on it) A good flat tappet hydraulic cam, top it with a set of aftermarket or other performance heads, a high rise dual plane aluminum intake and it'll run with the best of them.
