help with me a lsd or locker

i have an open 8: with 3.55's and i need a locker or lsd. the car will be for handeling, road courses, canyons runs type of things...what do you guys suggest me to get?>

From what I have read, you want a locker if you mainly drag. If you road/ralley race, you want to go with a LSD. A locker can cause an understeer effect, something I would prefer to avoid if tear-a$$ing through the canyons.
 
Each company makes a specific lsd or locker for a application, Look at different manufacture's, and see what they have, I would look for a LSD if thatw what your going to do with the car, check out Eaton, I have used there's before with good success.

I can think of 4 opentrack/road racing guys using Detroit Lockers off of the top of my head. I don't see what's wrong with them? OTOH, check out the new Detroit TruTrac.
 
It's partly a matter of driving style. A locker is harsh in operation and can make the car change from understeer to oversteer with varying throttle application. It favors more "brutish" driving, sort of throw it into the corner, and and hang the tail on exit. A LSD, preferrably a torque biasing type, favors a smooth driving style. I don't think a heavily biased LSD gives up much in traction to a locker. Having said that, I haven't driven a Mustang with a locker, but I have in other vehicles. Just my .02.
 
For anyone who thinks a LSD gets as much traction as a locker I post this video.

EDIT: Plus I have seen countless LSDs lay down the peg leg burnouts, those clutches will eventually wear out, sooner or later depening on how much slipping you subject them to.
 
Hmmmm. I don't know Edbert. That last guy approached the conveyor awefully quick compared to the others to convince me.

After all this, what does everyone recommend? I have an 8" with 3.00 open that I'd like to go to 4.11's with "double spinners" (both rear tires), only street use. I am very interested in this end result as well.
 
I'll say it again..IMHO...
Open = Honduh power levels and little-ole lady driving
LSD = modestly driven modestly powered street-only (what OEM uses)
Locker = agressive or high powered street and strip/track
Spool = race only (but I know guys who run them on street without complaints)

You just have to judge how willing you are to live with the strengths/weaknesses of the various options. It is similar to putting a high-lift high-duration cam in your car, it will become less "civilized" and "streetable", but if you are building for performance those are characteristics you are willing to give up for raw performance, same with a high-flow exhaust or big-arsed brakes. The term "locker" is often misunderstood to mean no-slip, it really is a bad term if you ask me, all lockers slip so they are really just a tighter LSD, and some lockers are softer than others.

I have a rebuilt LSD in my car now and it puts down 2 good stripes at the strip but I'm thinking of going to 31 spline axles and therefore would need a new "posi". I though the tru-trac would be the way to go as it supposted to have gears and not clutches to wear out.

Alright, I confess to not knowing what the insides of the true-trac look like so I just did some research. They use two sets of worm gears that enable differentiation based upon the slippage of the wheels, they are also called "hydrualic lockers". It is very hard to sift through what appears to be nothing more than marketing hype. I found this website to be very informative even though it (and many others I read) seem to focus heavily on offroad 4X4 applications. The only big drawback I have seen on the truetrac is that if one wheel loses traction enough it will spins as if you had an open diff, that is very easy to have happen in 4X4 land but much less likely in street/track driving as long as the pavement is dry. To be honest, from what I've read, and based upon the fact that there are no clutches or friction disks inside of it, that the trueTrac is more of a soft-locker like the Powertrax than a traditional "posi" or other brand of LSD. Remember what I said about lockers actually slipping themselves?

Limited Slip/Posi's
Limited-slip differentials behave very much like open differentials. Through various forms of friction mechanisms, they transfer a relatively small amount of power to the non-slipping wheel. They are generally smooth and quiet, but as the name implies, performance improvement is limited. Friction clutches reduce gas mileage, degrade under normal driving conditions, easily overheat when slipping and usually wear out rapidly becoming useless. The clutch packs require that friction/silencer additives be added to the differential fluid, which reduces overall lubrication effectiveness. Despite the marginal traction benefits offered by limited-slip/posi differentials, consumers have had little alternative but to accept the limited-slip/posi differential options offered by vehicle manufacturers, for marginal traction improvement, in lieu of conventional open differentials.

Lockers
Locking differentials, in effect, lock the two drive wheels together -- somewhat like "spools" that solidly connect the axles together. When powering straight ahead, engine power is equally delivered to both drive wheels. However, unlike spools that will not differentiate when turning and are therefore not streetable, lockers allow full wheel differentiation when cornering. Unlike the poor traction characteristics of open or limited-slip/posi differentials, when one wheel looses traction, locking differentials deliver engine power, not to the slipping wheel, but to the wheel with the highest amount of traction. Although locking differentials deliver excellent traction output and allow full wheel differentiation when turning, they are notoriously harsh and noisy. Used primarily in heavy industrial applications, that can be more forgiving than passenger cars or trucks, lockers have been adopted out of necessity by extreme off-road and performance-racing enthusiasts despite their harsh drawbacks.

The rear Truetrac operates in an identical fashion to the front version and provides more traction than any open differential, as well as providing additional strength. The rear Truetrac will not provide as much traction as a true locking rear differential, but much more than most people believe. The rear Truetrac is an excellent choice for those that want more traction than an open differential will provide but who are reluctant for whatever reason to fit a rear locking differential.

Basically a locker will not allow either wheel to turn faster/slower than the ring gear, the true-trac will allow it to turn 0.5 or 2.0x once engaged (infinite before engagement), and a lsd or open will allow an infinite (pretty much) differential action.

Not a bad compromise for those who must drive in mud/snow a great deal or who fear the noise and brutish nature of a locker. DEFINITELY a better option than a positrac!
