about 3 weeks ago I took off my hooker headers and had them thermal coated. flushed out my cooling system, junked the old mufflers, I think they were flowtechs or something and now waiting until tuesday to get an exhaust installed. So I took the car to the store (headers only and very loud) and it sputters and hesitates in any gear around 2500 - 3000 rpms??? Before the removal of the headers the car ran really good but was rich, I'm assuming it is rich by the smell.

I checked and wires are in the right firing order. The car starts up right away, idles fine and revs with no problem just when I go down the block and then it hesitates.... WTF!
Could it be because there is no mufflers to create any backpressure? I don't think so but I'm not sure :bang:

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!

302 bored .030 over w/ 10:1 compression, toploader 4 speed, centerforce stage 2 clutch, hurst pro comp shifter, billet steel flywheel, msd pro billet ready 2 run dizzy, gap air intake, 625 demon carb, billet underdrive pulleys, hooker competion longtube headers, 9" versailles rear end w/ 3.25 gears, 13" drilled/slotted rotors up front with cobra calipers, 17" tt 2 all way around

Never know, I've heard some of these rice burners are particular that way with their exausts and having to have a certain amount of back pressure to run correctly.

I was wondering since you reduced the back pressure now temporaily and the problem started right after, if a forward or retarding of the timing a bit would take care of it?, ( I would retard first a few degrees and try) , slight carb adjustment as a second attempt?

You could just wait till Tuesday to see if things return to normal once you have your new exaust on and will have some back pressure again before you start messing w/ things, then fine tune.

problem solved

I had super 40 series flowmasters installed and no more sputtering. After the muffler shop, it went straight to Mech Tech motorsports out of Escondido, CA. and dyno tuned ( www.mechtech-ms.com ). Great service and friendly staff. price was $150 for an hour on the dyno. so apparently with no back pressure it was causing the motor to run lean, so lean it ran like crap!
