Hey guys! I've just installed a new 331 stroker in my 89GT. Its running good, but I'm having two problems. First off, when it gets hot and I try to start it, it drags and doesn't want to start. Secondly, I have a 160 degree thermostat in it, but it is wanting to run at about 220 degrees. Much too hot. The throttle-body and upper-intake are very hot to the touch. Does anyone know what might be going on here? Any help is much appreciated. By the way, it only has 22 miles on the engine. Thanks

ok well what kind of fan are you useing, alt, have you double checked all your cables? make sure you pull the lil grey spout out when u set your timeing and what i would do is pull the number one plug out and bring it back to tdc and re stab the dizzy and re set the timing from there.

Post up everthing that you have done to the motor maybe that will help us out.

Its all new stuff. 331 stroker, holley systemax intake, 30# injectors, pro-m mass air meter, new oil pump and water pump, AFR 185 heads. The long block was built by M and R engines in California. We just got it on the road today. By the way, really appreciating your help.

Did you put your Tstat in backwards? Also if it is wanting to drag when it gets hot could be a bad starter or relay.. IF you T-stat is in right and it is still running that hot I would thinking something serious is wrong. Could be the way you have your belt routed. Are you sure that you water pump is turning the right direction

it really sounds like you just have the distributer about a tooth or 2 off bring it back up on tdc on number 1 and put it back in and try that set it at 12 and see what it does, it be a smart idea to pull the t stat and make sure its not sticking shut too bc if it was then the heat mite have somthing to do with it allso, its allso possable that your starter is getting to hot i have a friend who has lts on his car and had a issue just like that

Hey guys. Just got home from a long days work and havent had time to mess with the car today, but there is something else I forgot to mention yesterday. The car doesnt have near the power that it should with this new motor. This is going to drive me crazy until I get it worked out. Thanks for any help.

1. You need more initial, and what is your total, when is it "all in" by?
2. It's very possible you do not have the distributor installed correctly as mentioned previously.
3. You may have to burp your cooling system. If there is an air bubble, you will get hot and no matter what you do, it will always be hot.
4. Your starter is dragging because it's heat soaked. Install the best/largest cables... power and ground you can afford.

yep what you can do to is jack the front of the car up by the kmember and take the radiator cap off and let the car idle and make sure its full of collant when u start this get up to temp and the turn it off and keep the cap off, and let it sit there for about a hour or so maybe less and odds are the water level will have dropped. i normaly do this at night and let it sit with the nose up higher in the air and leave the cap off over nite and fill it back up the next day
