Hey guys whats up in the Stang world? I have had about every muscle car you can think of from fox body stang to SC SS Camaro. I am now ready to start a new project. I have a few questions for you guys. The first is can the 302 make 650rwhp on the gas? If not which motor can? 347? 306? Which car is the better platform for a build up the fox or the SN 95? I have not bought a car yet I am trying to decide which one will be easier to build up an which is the more user friendly car cause it will be a street car not a drag car. I can really use any info you guys have on what performance parts are the best for such a build up, where to buy them and what computer tuning the cars like the best. I look forward to talking to you guys in the future. Travis

Huh?

I'm not too sure I'd recommend that much power from a factory block, but alas... I've seen stranger things. You could do it with a 302, but chances are, you'd be going with a 306 if you kept the factory stroke just to put some forged pistons in, since .030 over is the typical overbore. A 347 would probably have an easier time doing it, but you're still looking at grenading a factory block, so you may want to look into getting an aftermarket (Dart, FRPP) block. How much power are you looking to make before nitrous? That would probably help get a start on what sort of parts to recommend. Oh, and welcome to :SNSign:

I agree. I don't think the 4ci difference between a 302 and a 306 would make much of a difference as far as power output. I suggest an aftermarket block because the stock HO blocks tend to split down the middle at about the 450-500hp mark. Some are lucky with a good tune and are able to get away with it but the HO block isn't the best to put a lot of power through. I also suggest a stroker either a 331 or 347. Some say the 331 is better for power adders which you might want to take into consideration for your 650 mark. I believe the fox is a better platform since it is lighter and a little simpler. The perks of the sn95 is that it already has 5 lugs and the brakes are much simpler to upgrade(4 wheel disks). You can't have all that go without the woh. All personal preference though because a fox can be upgraded... for a price though.

hey i remember reading a artical muscle mustangs and fast fords where they took a stock 86 motor cut valve notches in the pistons put in a nitrous grind comp hydralic roller and strapped on a set of afr 165 with the optional exhaust port and sprayed a 200 shoot from a edelbrock kit, it made 600 at the flywheel, they stopped in fear of splitting the block.

Chietala, as I read what you said, it could have gone either way (I am not sure if folks are real familiar with you - perhaps you haven't posted enough in Tech for people to know your sense of humor). Emoticons are always helpful.

Add to that, Travis is brand new to our site (though not to rodding). On the single point that he doesnt know any of us, it's hard to be funny and know it will be taken the right way.

On point, I agree about the aftermarket block. For a good representation of running well over 500 HP on a stocker, talk to Chris Eades (Eades 5.0). I would not chance it personally (I'm not and never will be that good).

Both a fox III and IV will need some tuning - you sound like the sort that would like to run a TwEECer, WB and a laptop and tune yourself. VRIstang, amongst others, has some very good info on his website about how he tuned his 408 with an RT. His tuning advice is outstanding and he's more than willing to help folks out. The tuning subforum can be helpful too.

Generally speaking, the SN95 is a better platform stock for stock. The fox III can catch up with some mods (for that matter, mods will be requisite for either, given how much power you desire to run). The SN's are packaging-challenged due to the hoodline. The SN processor is better (but the stock tune sucks - not of matter to you since you'll be tuning it anyhow).

You won't go wrong either way - pick what body style you like best and go for it.

And welcome to the boards!

I'm sorry and can't help it BUT, I thought the original post was a joke or sarcasim. I'm 48 and it sounds like he's owned many more performance cars than most people I know. Vol's Fan, do a lot of reading here, Corral.net and Hardcore 5.0 and you'll learn a lot. Plan your project 100's of times and built it correctly ONCE! Solid car with suspension, strong block, custom cam etc...Most everyone here will help you. Don't know why but it seems all us car guys/gals are smart asses a lot of the time.
Good luck,
vann

Hey man, I don't think anyone meant any disrespect. Some of us tend to be pretty serious on the tech side though. Me, well... I figured it was a joke, but on the slight possibility that you were serious, just said "huh?" Now that we know of your sarcastic side, we may not be so quick to jump to conclusions next time since we know it was a joke now.

i guess i'll jump on the band wagon. I did get that you were juking. pretty funny. but instead of turning this thread into a woe is me why is everyone picking on me you could help the guy with the question.

personally i would build up a fox platform because they are lighter. I would also look at 351w based strokers if you are wanting 650hp. If not then a 347 built in a aftermarcket block and perhaps a twin turbo set up. i guess juice works just aswell though.

This was directed at me? I was trying to be nice and kinda on your side. I reiterate that posting veiled-sarcasm on a guy's first thread isn't a real hot idea. He came in here for assistance and opinions.

I started out with two lines of what I thought would help keep this from happening again (it would have been helpful to you in case you did not understand that not everyone has your level of understanding and might not realize your humor). Then I moved onto the real reason I posted, five or six things I thought might be poignant. You'll note the majority of my post is about the topic-at-hand. As flattering as it is that you think I posted just for you, posting about the differences in both body styles (owning and liking to think I know a little about each, I thought I might be able to help) was the reason I participated. Remember, people search these threads, so your target audience isn't necesarily the thread starter, but anyone who is looking for answers.

Please share some of your expertise with us so we can all learn - that's the real point of this forum and this thread.

I was going to suggest a 351 based stroker too, might be easier to get around 650hp with the extra cubes.

I know there are quite a few guys here running 351's in fox's... vristang I beleive?

I'm not sure if a 351 will fit in a sn95, but I guess I don't see why it wouldn't except maybe for hood clearance (easy to fix).

I would do a fox with a 351 stroked to .....oh....... maybe a 408. That would be nice, if only I had the funds.

No, he's NOT the Stangnet police... I am. Hissin is just one of those guys that goes out of his way to help everyone.

Your initial response to this thread, made no indication whatsoever that you were joking. As a result, folks that read it did their best to ensure that original poster didn't walk away with misinformation (as they should, since this "IS" the tech forum). We have lots of places throughout this board for folks to hang out and joke around. The technical forum on the other hand, is where we like to practice our hobby and help each other out with issues in that relation.

Since the posts you've made in this thread thus far do not contribute to the question that was initially asked, I'll removed them so that we can carry on with providing those answers.

Yes, you can make 650 RWHP on pump gas with a 302 motor. The factory blocks (as mentioned before) are not designed to handle these power levels and will split down the lifter valleys starting at around 450 RWHP (not an absolute number, just a rule of thumb). You will need an aftermarket block for those HP levels. A DART Sportsman would be my recommend.

Of course, the more displacement you have, the easier it will typically be to reach those levels. After that, it's up to your components and the build.

I don't recall where I first heard it but...

CHEAP -- FAST -- RELIABLE

Pick two and base your build from it. You can't have all three.

There are as many ways to reach your HP goals as there are users on Stangnet. Perhaps talking a bit more abotu what your intentions are for the car, might help narrow those options down a bit.

Thanks for the post guys. I didn't realize that the blocks were that big of an issue. My intenions for the car is to have a toy to play with on the weekends. I never go to the track. All of my buddies have LS1 cars which is what I just sold. So the 650 thing is out becaues I don't have the funds for a new block. What head/cam/ intake combo can I run that will get me close to the LS1? I want something that sounds mean. I looked at a 93 coupe today that has LT headers h pipe an flowmaster catback along with CAI. It also has UD pulleys an 3.73 gears with centerforce clutch. What is the estimated rwhp of this car the way it sits? I didn't mean to sound like a prick in the first post I just really don't have a clue about these cars. I have a bout 3500-4000 to spend on the car right now.

By the way the car has 97000 on the clock what are the problems that normally come up around this time?

that sounds like a nice car. You know how he drives since he is a friend. was he nice to the car? the 95's are heavier then the fox's. Personally i don't like the looks of them but i'm not the one buying it. If the car is in good shape and the compression is blower happy get it and bolt on a supercharger. you will have no issues with your other buddies.

I also found out that the car has a speed pro blueprinted an balanced rotating assembly an jms chip. My only concern is that the heads have been shaved. Is that going to put the compression to high for a blower or nitrous set-up?
