What rpm are you trying to shift at? You might be shifting to 2nd too high and when it drops down, it's already at the shift point to go into third and therefore you actually miss second gear all together. That's what was happening with mine and I had to get the manual valvebody to stop burning it up. With a standard AOD, the shift point can't be much higher than 5200-5300 and still get every gear.
That will be a blast! Hey do you have any engine pics by chance? I was gonna build a 460 but i'm going with a 408 instead.
