Ive stumbled across a deal on a complete 5.0 and tranny outta a 89 grand marquis. My only question is i know there is 2 versions of the 5.0 does anyone know if this is a HO version. I can get the complete engine and tranny which has 53,000 original miles for $750. I was gonna use this engine for my build up project. Anyone got any info on this??

Does the nameplate on the intake manifold say HO on it? That would be my first clue.

I havent seen the engine a guy i work with told me he had it. He doesnt remember of hand whether it was an HO or not. The car got totalled last month and he pulled the engine outta it. Cause of the low mileage.

The HO wasn't available in the Grand Marquis. The only engine options were 140hp 5.0 single exhaust
150hp 5.0 dual exhaust
or a carbed 5.8L

Some guys 'convert' them to HO's, check the throttle body, the SO has a 52mm? T/B.

Differences in the SO vs HO

very slightly dished cast pistons with NO valve reliefs(any cam over a standard H.O. would be asking for P/V issues)
14lb injectors(black)
E6 heads(86-91)
Upper intake is different(lower is the same as H.O.)
Different firing order/cam
86+ are roller blocks but not neccesarily roller motors.
T/B is much smaller
Speed density
Nylon toothed Timing chain set
Forward rotation waterpump
EGR spacer is tiny and can safely be bored to 62-63mm tops.
Oooo and those lovely cast iron exhaust manifolds.

Would the block be a good starting point to build up. Or should i look for a HO. Im am hoping to find a spare motor so i can still drive my car when im doing all the work on the engine?
