Holes in back of timing cover? what are they for?

Mine had the same exact problem when I bought it. I pulled my cover thinking it was the gasket and then discovered those two little holes you are talking about. I think that those holes are there for a different water pump style and are not used on our cars. But they are tapped so deep and the metal is so thin on the backside of them that eventually they crack and coolant of course comes out. I fixed mine while the cover was off of the car with JB Weld two years ago and have never had a problem since then.
Like I said though I already had my cover off thinking it was a gasket leak, but there is no reason to have to pull the cover to fix it. Just clean it up realy really good. Maybe squeeze a bit of silicone in the holes then JB Weld over them and alow it to try overninght. You will be good as new for under 10 bucks.

I think maybe I am having the same problem. I have a little coolant that pools in the valley's you're talking about on the timing cover. I thought maybe my thermostat housing gasket was leaking but found no signs of leakage there. I thought maybe a hose was leaking but I don't see any leakage there either. Possibly those holes that I didn't know were there is the culprit. Maybe mine have worn through as well. I have 165k on the clock so maybe they have just worn through. I will have to check that before I start tearing things apart. I was going to replace the timing cover gasket again. I replaced it last year when I broke an oil pan bolt off in the cover and had to take the cover off. It's an easy job to do it's just time consuming to take all that crap off for one stupid timing cover gasket.
the cover i bought brand new had the holes "open" already when i got it...i didnt JB weld them i just put my finger on the other side of the hole with the water pump off obviously...and squeezed a bunch of RTV into them and let it set overnight..one side was good but the other i think might leak a bit still...but my thermostat housing is leaking now so who knows....iv had nothing but problems with coolant leaks since i installed the motor....water pump seems to be ok now though

My car has had 2 puddles one on each side for a long time now and i'd have to refill my reservior once a month.A few days ago i installed a new compressor and now my coolant reservior said low coolant in one day plus i saw the coolant coming out from there too.I went outside with a flashlight after reading this thread and cleaned out the timing cover on the right hand side and finally saw the small hole. I can't get to the other side without removing something out of the way. Should i remove my waterneck and hoses?? That should make perfect space to get to the hole right? I want to get rid of this problem as quick as possible,looks like i'll be doing it on the weekend. And where can i buy some JB Weld at??
your best bet is to remove the water pump and redo those gaskets cause if its leaking out those small holes it could of affected the rest of the gaskets seal on the water pump....i ended up JB welding mine shut...you can buy jb weld at farm and fleet auto parts stores and even wal mart in the auto section..

Those holes have leaked on my car for years. The last time I changed my water pump I was very careful and put a good bead of RTV on the water passage inside of those holes and no leaks have surfaced in a good 6 monts. But the JB Weld would be a good fix if you don't want to remove the waterpump to fix it.

Well i bought some JB Weld today and i'm going to try and fix this leak problem on saturday or maybe tomorrow if i get out of work early so wish me luck guys.
