Home Made RAI... HOLY ****!!!

Ok, so my passenger's side fog light stopped working. I took it out, the bulb was shot. I took the whole fog light out just for fun.

One thing led to another, and I got about a 2 foot piece of shop-vac hose, stuck it through the fog light hole and into the fenderwell. I duct taped it so the opening was about 2 inches from the opening of the air silencer. I said what the hell and took it for a spin.

holy ****!!!

There is a VERY noticable increase in power. I took it to the highway, and it went from 20 to 80 MUCH quicker than before. I thought the front wheels were going to leave the ground from a start, and in 4th when you're over 2,000rpm it pushes you back in your seat.

Bottom line:

I only got one pic right now...

I know my front bumper is very dirty, but it's been a while since a wash

Wait are you serious? like really? my dad swears by RAI when he used to have a lot of old muscle cars back in his days. But todays computerized cars and stuff... its generally said that dont do crap, but, TAKE IT TO THE TRACK

its a pyschological effect..those kind of "ram air" things dont actually do anything for power...

A dyno won't show the "true" benefit of a ram air setup. Take it to the track to find out if you really did make some gains. March makes a kit similar to what you did. And I think a company makes a kit like what you did for Skylines.

i dont see why it wouldnt work if cool outside air is being forced right into the filter. i thought about doing this a couple of times.

yea dynoing wont tell you of the increase, but while the car is moving i bet there is a nice sotp feel.

ok maybe some slight computer adjustments here and there in the power curve.

I agree. Take it off, do a couple of runs on the track. Put it on, and repeat, then see if it's just wishful thinking. I'd like to know!

That thing's expensive for what it actually is, so I wonder it it actually delivers on its promise.
Heck it's probably better than a CAI kit.

if you look at an SS and WS6 the engine is the exact same as the z28, the extra power is advertised as comming from better exhaust and timing changes...but in reality the corvette, ss and z28's with LS1s make about the same #'s on the dyno...

I had a ram-air setup on my KB'd 5.0. I slapped it on to counter the KB's excessive heat soak in the summer months since I found myself pulling out excessive ignition timing otherwise. It seemed to be worth the money in that application, but I'm hesistant to invest in that for the NA 4.6. Good idea though.. it's nearly free so why not?

In most "ram air" setups the best you can hope for is a HP or two from a cooler charge. I have a data logger, and my intake temp on the highway, or just plain moving, is only about 5 degrees more than the outside air and I've go a straight shot intake. Have you SEEN the space between the radiator and the block in a GT? PLENTY of air moves in there. I saw on some guy's site where he figured you would have to go 265mph to get a full pound of boost with a "ram air" setup (and he had a PhD in physics). If you "think" your car is faster, that's really all that matters, isn't it?

I've seen that mounted on an old fox in a parking lot, and I thought it looked dumb as hell. Kind of obscure just sticking down under the bumper. I guess I'm just a guy that has to have symmetrical everything.
