A mechanic that I know had a customer that had one of those on his stang. He went through a deep puddle in florida after a hurricane and a bunch of water got in the engine. He cracked the block.

Anyway, the closest track to me (that I know of) is a couple hours away, so I won't be going there for awhile.

I suppose it could be a little pshycological but I watched the speedometer, it definitely went up quicker.

The airflow was VERY restricted, before, there was the fog light blocking all airflow, then a series of rock protectors for the engine. The Air Silencer had to suck the air up, now, a little air is being forced in there, you get a better effect the quicker the car is moving. I know it's nothing like throwing in a KB, so please refrain from flaming me in the "he thinks his car is 500hp now" department. Thanks.

Just FYI, I left the hose a couple inches from the inlet to the air silencer, so that no water or rocks would get in there. Plus, it still has to get through the K&N drop-in before it touches my Accufab

I managed to fabricate a 'ram air' setup on my car that was almost totally undetectable unless you knew it was there, and for about $3.00 in parts. That was the exciting part. The performance gains were non-existent. I felt like at higher speeds (130+) that it might help, but other than for high speed use to achieve a slightly cooler charge, you won't see any gains. Pulling the headlight IS worth something at the track as it puts the filter smack in the coolest possible airstream. End of discussion.

BTW - The ram air setups on the SS and WS.6 are totally nonfunctional in stock form.

i have a RAI too, LOL, and when i pull the fron headlight at the track I gained .5 mph, ran 3 or 4 runs with the headlight and a bunch with the headlight out right in front of the moified box and it did help

I'll clean it once it goes 12's on stock heads. i'm sure i won't need a headswap and 150 shot, or a cobra motor to go high 12's.

My shaker hood is functional.......functually makes the car look better!!! That's the only reason I can see for Ram Air on Todays newer Vehicles.

Didn't someone post an article awhile back about the physics of ram-air effects?

If I recall correctly, the main conclusion was that the velocity of incoming air needed to get added power from such a set-up would necessitate speeds much faster than your average Mustang can travel in realistic environments (i.e. not the Bonneville Salt Flats)

Wow I remember that thing, was one of the first mods available for a Mod motor in 96. I almost bought one but seen guys making them out of vacuum cleaner atachments and plastic pipe from home depot for 15 dollars. I went with a k&n drop in back then.

At Mach 2 you should definitely start feeling substantial gains from RAI. The problem is getting there...

Drop that in the hose to get some serious PSI!

But dont use your alternator, that would just wastes its own power, sooo

Throw THAT in your trunk and make it power the fans in your RAI and you'll be set

Do I smell a $12 75 HP ebay supercharger with MS Paint dyno results?!

I thinks these setups have some advantages and can provide some gains, but not from ram air effect, but from the drop in inlet temps. On a forced induction car inlet temps make a huge difference. according to KB's tuning notes, a 10 degree drop in inlet temp is worth 1% increase in hp. So if you have a 400hp engine and the temp under the hood is 120+ degrees but the the air pulling in from a hose under the bumper is 70 degrees, that is a pretty good increase.

I made my own RAI too when i first got the car. I took dryer hose like you and ran it into the fender and attatched it to a brake duct off an M3 (got a cuz who works for bmw) and put the duct in the hole between the foglights. I didnt notice much driving around Xcept my car was a tiny bit more quiet, but on the highway you could tell the engine felt a little less stressed and more capable. Not enough to make much of a difference though. Now i just have a fender CAI, the intake tube and airbox on the mustangs is pretty damn good stock, not much to improve on with RAI and CAIs

I bought one of those in 98, I installed it and almost immediatly returned it. That thing was ugly, It looked like a piece of trash hanging from the bumper,....That was the only choice besides the K&N back then.
