Homemade CAI pics:Lets see em'

Had to go way back in the history folder but this is I believe 3" exhaust tubing with a 73mm 94/95 C&L screwed to a factory replacement K&N filter. Worked great and was very cheap. Just bought I believe 3/8 npt fitting and welded in for the sensor.
A little FYI that may help is when I painted mine I primed it, then painted it chrome. Then I sprayed Clear coat over top the chrome and it dulled it out to a point of what you see which is just a couple shades off of the powder coating on the intake.

That looks nice, I may have to hack up my old mac cai I have sitting here off my old fox and use it once Pro-M gets done screwin around with my MAF. Looks way cleaner.
The paint job is really bad but I used what I had on hand at the time. What you see was a trial fit/test to see if I had any probs over time. Its been over a year now and one of these days I'll get around to making things look better. The maf is a ProM shorty 80mm btw.

Grady did you make that bracket to attach the MAF to the fenderwell? I would be very interested in getting one of those from you as I have the same setup.
Here is a couple of pictures I just got back today.. A lot more recent then the others I posted. It's the new CAI I built for my 418. It's 4" mandrel bends, 4" exhaust tubing, 92mm MAF and hooks onto a 90MM throttle body.. Once fabbed and tig welded I sent it in to have it ceramic coated for a little bling bling

I'm looking at fabricating a mass air to fenderwell set-up. I just have to find out if anyone around here can mandrel bend 4" exhaust pipe. I'd like to 90 over into the fenderwell and then 90 down into the fender a ways to get it as far away from the engine as possible. I just dont know how that will effect the airflow to my mass sensor.

The trip to Home Depot took way more of an effort than what it took to make the little bracket.
Just buy the soft aluminum material in a three foot section for less than 5 bucks. Cut a section of coat hanger to use as a pattern and bend it to fit next to the maf and fender.
Bend the soft aluminum to match the coat hanger pattern
All Done

Remember .... with a three foot section you can hose up a time or two

I was going to do that and put the MAF inside the fender... with me it seemed a bit tight with the 4" tubing and I didn't like the idea of 3 90 degree bends. But I'm sure it would have been fine as long as you can get it in there.. 3-3.5" would probably be easier. As far as the 4" mandrel bends I just bought them from a local muffler shop that does some custom work. With the 90's you can cut them to what ever angle you need. here's how i made mine (i would show somw pics too but i dont know how....any help!?!?!?!) i took about an 8-10" long piece of aluminum exhaust tubing, and had my dad weld a little tube comin out for the vacuum hose between the oil cap and the intake.....then i bought two 3" intake clamps from autozone and put one comin from the throttle body to the tube, then one outta the tube and onto the mass air...then i took a stubby conical k & n and put it on the end of the mass air...then i took a piece of dryer duct from home depot and fed it thru the front bumper and thru the fenderwell into the front of the filter..ram air.....im now in the process of making an amuminum shield to go around the filter since its in the engine bay..also another suggestion my dad brought to my attention...dont make a bracket attaching the intake to the fender well because when the engine torques the other way, it mite bend or snap the bracket if its an abrupt enough rev or launch....

but i'm curious ... why not push the filter out into the fenderwell? i bet the intake air gets really hot, which i imagine causes the computer to pull the timing. fwiw, when i had my filter under the hood like that, the intake air would get to 170 degrees after sitting at a traffic light for a minute or two.
