Hood buffet at 120+MPH

I noticed when i travel at 120MPH and higher the hood starts buffeting and i don't dig it very much. I think hood pins look like crap and don't want the cables scratching my paint. Do you guys have any ideas how to solve this other than not going over 120MPH or using pins? Thank you.

U could get the hood pins without the cables that use cotter pins.. or you could try using hood struts... Or since most of the problem is the lip not lining up with the grill you get some of that weather stripping they use on vettes and use it to prevent air from coming straight on under the hood.... (I personally would use hood pins).... good luck

Thanks, i forgot about the pins without cables. Would merely installing those pins stop this effect or will it require a change to the little studs the hood sets down on? Thank you.

When I took mine to 120 I was to busy grinning to notice if my hood was moving.....Hmmm, might have to do it again just to check. Thanks for pointing that out.

At any speed above 80 I notice the left side of my hood moving. Seems to be about where the wheelwell is. I have checked everything out. The front closes tight, lines up well with the grill and fenders and when I pull up on the hood it does not move(all the way from side to side I've done this). The rubber stops along that fender seem fine. The back of the hood where the hinges are is fine as well. It reminds me of NASCAR when you see the roof cams and the hood is buckling from the airflow at speed... The hood does not appear to shake at all. From the driver's seat it looks as if something is under that spot pushing up on the hood. The hood does not move at all along the windshield.

It starts at about 105-110 but does not become noticeable until you hit 120 and then it is moving a lot. I cannot tell where most movement is because the whole hood appears to be moving like i was under a heavy duty dryer. I wonder if a vented hood would solve the problem. I assumed it was because there was too much play in the little studs the hood sits on combined with the latching mechanism.

I had the same problem. I have an 06 GT and it didn't start til about 120. I installed hood pins this week w/o the cables and it fixes the problem entirely. That hood does not MOVE (and in my opinior it looks good with the pins w/o the cables). Oh, and as a side note, the cables (should you decide to use them) are heavily coated with clear rubber, there's nothing that could POSSIBLY scratch the paint.

iam going the extra mile and getting a vented hood(carbon fiber) and the pins...i dont like that hood moving at all....and the vents just look cool.

I used to have problems with my hood above 80mph. I ended up adjusting the four rubber bumpers along the front of the hood out and solved the problem. That might be worth a try for you.

just adjust the rubber bumpers up. My hood does not shake at 140

I don't mean to be a wet blanket here....but if you're doing that speed so often that you need a hood modification, then stay the hell away from my area.

I don't do it that often (twice in 6 months...) but that does not make it suck any less when i do and the hood starts acting like an Alchy with no Liquor.

Since you don't state your location that is kind of hard. Not to be a wet blanket myself but why would you buy a car that can reach such speeds and never do it? Do you own a cool monster truck or a Hummer that has never seen anything but pavement too? The last time i did it i was trying to prevent an SS Camaro from hurting my pride, and he never got past me, even though i still cannot figure out why since his car was way more powerful than is mine.

I do 120MPH at least 40 or 50 times a month(at the track, of course ) and have had hood pins with the dreaded cables on the hood for a year with no scratches.

My gosh I did a 120 once and you can call me a wimp all day long. I won't ever be going that fast again. I was fearless til I hit 21years old. when my bp went up I wised up.

My hood moves at 80+ or when a large truck passes by. I tried adjusting the hood using the 4 adjusters. The hood checks very tight, but still "Buffets".

I just spent 51+ minutes averaging 105 mph for 90 miles and the only thing that spoiled my ride was that shaking hood. Hood pins are an obvious answer. I've had them on my 69 Mach 1 since new.

I have seen two installations. One was on a Shelby GT-H and the other on a Coupe at the Mustang of LV Car Show this past weekend. The GT-H installed looked easier but not as solid as the Coupe. However, the guy that owned the Coupe told me what he went through to put the pins in (like remove the whole headlight assembly, drilling holes to fit a socket up to tighten the nut at the bottom of the pin.

Does anyone have pictures of their install? I don't need to reinvent the wheel. Would rather find someone who has done it already.

I could see about adjusting the rubber stops on the left side, but not sure if that would do me any good at all. My hood lifts up, not shake side to side. So if I adjust the stops would that just keep the hood pushed up in that spot even when parked. It lines up perfectly now as it is.

Pics are kind of hard to get in such a tight space. You might do a search. There used to be a good install thread, if it didn't get lost in the crash. Anyway, I didn't cut a hole in the lower part of the radiator support, I ordered longer pins from Summit and mounted them thru both the top and bottom. I don't remember the brand but I think they were the only 5" long pins Summit had. You might also check with Shelby, if they put pins in the CS6 then they probably sell a kit. Maybe?
