Hood Pin style's

seems like most classic stangs use the hood pins with the cables attached. i've seen some hood pins that have no cable, and they just have a round key hole to lock my hood down. My friend said this locking style is only for rice rockets?? So am i gonna get laughed at if i use these key locking ones? For the people that use the pins with cables, do you use any other type of hood locking device to prevent people from getting into the hood?? Any pics of hood locks would be appriciated.

I have the std pins with cables. I heated up a very small clear tubing and put it over the cable so it wouldn't scratch up the paint.
If you decide to go cable less (which is fine IMO) it just makes it easier to lose the pins. That's why I have the cables.

i have the cable style in mine and have also done the tube trick. i used air hose from fish tanks and split it and slipped in on.

I have the ones your friend called ricer- I think they look great, very clean looking-

I have the ones with the pins on my other car, also looks good too-

I just bought some used "ricer" locking style ones with no cables off ebay for $15. Havent installed them though. I think they look nice.

Thanks for the comments guys. One reason i was worried about using the cables was because i was scared i was gonna scratch my paint. That tube trick sounds like a good idea. I also think the locking ones look pretty clean. Do any of you guys that use the pins/cables use any sort of locking mechanism on your hood for security? Thanks

i've see guys use small padlocks on the hood pins instead of the regular pin. seems to work fine and would definitely deter a thief

Personally, I don't care much for the pins. I have seen pins with captive lanyards, they're basically the same as the wire attached ones, with the ring captive in a stainless steel slide plate which screws to the bonnet. Most modern race cars use these I think.

My favorite, however, is these:

The straight thru pins, no cable, were put on the California Specials. They look fine, hold together well. Just make sure the springs and back mounting hardware are installed snug. Its a sad day when you're driving down the freeway and one of the damn things works itself loose and flys off. Very depressing.

I'm going touse the locking ones on my new project, I have no hood catch or release inside so I need some way of locking the hood down, I think the locking ones look good,

i use this hood locks in twist style. Original use on 1970 Mustangs.

I had the round locking type that uses a round barrell type key
(similar to a pop machine key). I switched these out before the car ever hit the road.
They only turn about one 1/4 turn and should not be trusted by themselves to hold down your hood. I do not have a latch.
I switched to the pin style but did not install the lanyard for fear of damaging the paint..Does the plastic tube that some of you are suggesting still rub on the paint?
I like the look of the lanyard and it helps you keep track of the pins.
Another consideration when using locks is the amount of time to unlock the hood should you ever have a fire under the hood

i don't have any hood pins myself (yet), but thought i'd mention that you could also use R/C car/truck/plane/boat fuel tubing instead of plastic to cover the cables, it'd probably be softer.

These are the captive ones you can get. No chance of rubbing paint with cables. Don't worry about the anodized colours, you can get them in plain Stainless also. I've used these on my rally cars in the past.
