Is the horn brush (The set of three spring loaded brass pins that touch the horn's contact plate) interchangable between a 1984 mustang and a 1990? I see a 1990 horn brush sitting in a salvage yard one city over, and I'd like to know if it'd work before I get pulling : D.
'87-'93 are 2 metal plates with raised dimples & foam in between. The foam degrades from the heat. The density of the foam determines the stiffness. There are no springs & no pins.
I found the answer by pulling one at the yard. Horn brush is located behind the steering wheel. On an 85-89 they look like this:
The reason I was looking for a new brush is that one of the pins had broken off the brush and thus the horn no longer worked. In a 1984 the brush is set deeper in the column by way of a tower-like housing. Meaning that the brush I needed was longer. Fortunatly I salvaged the pins and springs from an 89 mustang and put them into a an 84 brush. Worked dandy. Problem solved.
You had me confused by the term "Horn Brush". I assume that's what contacts the horn slip rings.
3 pins: 1 for 1 slip ring, 1 for the other slip ring, don't know what 3rd one is for.
