Hot starting issues

My 02 GT has trouble starting up after the engine is fully warmed. Like, if I stop at a quicky-mart, or shut the engine off to refuel, when I try to start it, it cranks over quickly and then on the second try it will start (or, if I just hit the throttle slightly). The car has 8400 miles on it, and the only engine mod installed so far is the ubiquitous K&N filter and some upgraded charging wires. Also have MagnaPacks if that matters. It's kind of embarassing at times.

I also have a 02 GT and it has the same problem. I have the K&N filter and Flowmasters, have not had it checked out yet just waiting to see if it gets worse. Also in winter when I run the heater I get a burnt oil smell but I cant find any leaks. Strange car but I love it.

i just made the same post yesterday, i was just looking for answers to it when i stumbled across yours. my 02 gt has been doing this since new. ford is no help on this matter, i replaceed the iac so i will narrow that out for u guys. my post was to find out if there was a fix yet. cause when my problem started there were others here that had the problem. i was living with it, and just trying to let my car cool down between starts, but it is getting worse. now for the first time it is also doing this on cold starts.


this make me feel that it is just some faulty part that is going, possably somthing in the fuel system? just a guess

Maybe this could help .I've expirienced this with my ol' 5.0L.
If a starter gets warm it will not start until after it is cooled down,and the syptem only gets worse.Which is usually means the silonoid is no good,worn or deffective!!
But it is funny that all of you are experiencing the same problem,unless they have diffected starters in that year.

Just a thought.If you are under warranty still,have it checked,or have them try a different one.

if your local dealer can't or won't help...contact dearborn..contact them directly..it usually get things taken care of, especialy on mustangs...it's their trademark car..and they are usually fast to act on getting things resolved..

I have the same problem too. It'll crank, and not turn totally over, but if i blip the throttle itll turn over and run. It only happens occationally, and like you said, only if the cars been driven and turned off for a short while. Its strange, but i have no idea if its a starter thing, and ecu thing or whatnot.

Yep....same here with my 02' GT.

I had the IAC replaced and it didn't fix it.

It's not the greatest of issues since the car always eventually starts.....but it is a tad embarassing when it does this.

I'm taking my stang in this week to have a squeak in my suspension fixed.....I'll probably go ahead and have them look into this as well.

seems like the majority of this problem is occuring on the 02 gts. ford replaced my iac, no help though. i think i will start to replace things my self. i wonder if this could be starter related?

also mine always used to do it only when the engine was hot, never once did it when cold. just recently it started doing it when engine is cold as well as hot. trust me its the same problem as yours, its just getting worst. ive had it for a year and a half like this. just starting to get worse though. i thinking i might replace the egr, the fuel pump regulator next. then maybe the starter and fuel pump itself later. somthing has to work.

I have an 01' bullitt and have the same exact problem. I keeping my fingers crossed that after a dyno tune (need to add a few more mods first) it will be better.

hey i have 03 GT and having the same trouble i called dearborn and they said the more people that calls with the same problem they will noitce a trend and do some research to find out what the problem is and have a recall on it the phone # is 800-392-3673

Yep, My '02 does the same thing. The difference in my episodes are that I occasionally get a small backfire sound. As soon as it does that, it always turns right over.

I had/have the same problem. My car is a 5-speed 2004 GT vert. I took it in to Ford and they found no problems.

My question for all you that have this problem is this: how do you start your car? I mean, when you get in, do you just stick the key in and turn it right away?? Because I used to do that. A couple weeks ago I started waiting before turning it over till that ding-dinging stops. You know, the beeping when you stick the key in?? Wait till that stops (It beeps 4 or 5 times), then turn the key over. Since I've started doing this, I've never had any problems.

I don't know if this all makes any sense, or it may not even work for anyone else. All I know is that had the problem you all talk of since the day I bought the car (end of March), and now I don't. Who knows, maybe it even fixed itself.

I start my car like this and still have the prob.

I start it like this because of my Foxes. I would turn the key, hear the fuel pump prime and wait for it to stop before i crank the car. I just got so used to it that i continue doing that to my '03 even though i can't hear the pump prime. I am not even sure if it does prime, but i pause anyway for a couple of seconds, at least til all the warning lights and chimes stop.

They said the same thing about the ticking that happens occassionally in the passenger cylinder head. Whatever. It didn't work, so I turn the key to "Ignition" put my seatbelt on and then start the car. No problems now. I guess it may have to do with the fuel system needing to be primed.

I have had this exact same problem. I am 99% sure it is fuel related. Check your fuel pressure, my buddy was having this problem, he cleaned his IAC, replaced the starter, replaced the battery, ect. but the problem was still there. It turned out to be the fuel pump. Definitly check your fuel pressure.

Add me to the list. Never actually failed to start, just a couple of stumbles, and only when hot and requiring a re-start after less than 2-3 minutes of shut off.

BTW, what is it with the ticking sound. I only hear it under hard acceleration with the windows up. Windows down, I guess the wind noise kills it.

Bingo, my brother has a 2002 that does that, my 2003 hasn't shown signs yet of this happening. ANyway I told him to delay the start as you eluded to.

My thoughts, first car I've ever owned that I can't here the fuel pump before starting. Think they use a week fuel pump.
