Everyone says to do gears bu thow bad do they actually kill your gas mileage?

it depends what ratio you go with and if you do a lot of driving around town or on the highway. overall, its not much of a difference if you can keep your foot out of the throttle. gears are fun. do it.

If you do most of your driving in town, you won't notice any difference at all. But out on the highway you'll lose a couple.

City driving won't be affected much (once you get past stomping on the pedal so much). Some say you'll even save because the engine doesn't have to work as hard. I was getting around 19 mpg city with stock gears. With 4.10s, I'm getting 18 mpg.

At highway speeds, you'll see some loss if you try to maintain the same driving speeds as you did with stock gears. I used to drive 80 mph really easy and still get around 24 mpg. With 4.10s, my tach reads a hair over 3,000 RPM. No way I'll get 24 mpg holding 3,000 RPM for an hour. If I stay around 60 mph, my tach will be around 2,000 RPM. I could possibly get 24 mpg like that.

Now I understand why some fast looking cars stay in the slow lane and do 65 mph when everyone else is in the fast lanes doing 80-85 mph.

I have 4.10s and I do high wat driving once or twice a week for about 30-40 mins and every day for about 20 and I know thats not alot but mine didnt change at all.

Still don't understang how you guys get 18-19 in the city. I get 14.9 consistantly.. and have since I drove it off the lot.

Driving style maybe? Though I did have a friend who was getting like 9 mpg in a Ford Explorer. The dealer did everything they could think of short of replacing the engine and could not get it to do the advertised fuel consumption.

I get 16.5 mpg in the city with 4.10s. When I drove the car from NY to CA, maintaining speeds between 75 and 85 mph I got 25 mpg.

i've average 15 city, 27 highway the whole time i owned the car, with stock gears and with 3.73s, it didnt change

City driving I don't even bother with gas mileage. Highway driving, it's remained the same about 26 mpg at about 70 mph.

I get about 17-18 in town, but I recently got 30mpg on the interstate.

as long as you are not constantly on the throttle and going fast on the highway your gas mileage shouldn't really change mine hasn't change alot with my 3.73's but the gas milaege to me is like not a big deal

with 4.56's I get 16-18 city and 23-25 hiway...with the stock 3.55's my city MPG was about the same(with the occasional 20mph) but my hiway was around 27-28mpg...so I only lost a little..

4.56, I wouldn't have it any other way !

I'm getting 20 mpg, thats driving mainly in rural areas with a little city driving included. That also includes some "spirited driving" and warming the car up on cold mornings. I have 4.10's btw.

I get about 20-22 highway and that is if I keep it under 75! lost maybe 2mpg on the highway! and gained .4 in the 1/4!!!

Just so you guys know, fuel consumption isnt just based on rpm. Its based on how much fuel it takes to keep the vehicle moving at the rate of velocity you've chosen for it. zzzzzzzzzzzzthis is why cars with 4.10 gears can achieve similar to better gas mileage than cars with stock gearing. Especially in an area with alot of hills and slopes. The car with the lower fd will have to modulate the gas the pedal alot more than a car with a higher final drive ratio. Remember tourqe is multiplied by the FD so you have more tourqe to use at the same level of throttle than before. Thus alot less load on the engine at the same speed and incline.
