How bad is it to redline a stock 2v gt? I was wondering because ive never hit the rev limiter but atleast once or twice a week i hit the redline right at around 5800-6000, occasionally ive gone up to 6400 or so...How bad is this?

you dont make any more power at 6400 than you do at 5800.

if i'm not mistaken you shoudl be shifting at 5800 to stay in the power range.

the rev limiter is there for a reason. it wont hurt if you accidently hit it every now and then but dont make a habit of pushing it that far. mine is set to 6050rpm. i'm on forced induction so that makes a differance but when i was n/a i didnt push it pash 5800 b/c the power drops off anyways.

It shouldn't hurt it since you don't do it occassionally. These guys that do these sustained burnouts bouncing off the redline probably aren't doing it any good though.

Or when your gas pedal goes under the carpeting on the freeway I've hit mine at least a 100 times. No major issues.

I had the tach read around 6200 rpm and I didnt hit a limiter.

With the Predator I bumped it down to 6k when the rev limit comes on.

Ive done it twice, maybe three times.

Oh, your fine....i used to shift @ 6200RPMs. I probably have 100s of 6200RPM shifts under my belt. 0 problems....even wound 4th gear to 6400RPMs. And hit my 6500RPM limiter a few times.

Nothing to worry about

i raised my limiter to 6350 so i can stay in 4th gear longer during a freeway run so i dont come down into 5th at WOT at 3500rpm and bog the motor down.

If your rpms estimations are based on the stock tachometer on your dash you are really revving it a few hundred rpms lower than it says. If you hook up like a 5 inch tachometer that will read your TRUE rpms then you would be pushing the engine to it's TRUE rpm level. I have heard that ford does this so you don't redline your engine or in your case when you "think" you have redlined it you haven't. It's just a trick designed to save your engine from blowing if you decide to be stubborn from time to time. Best thing to do is buy a tachometer off ebay for 60 bucks shipped to your door and install it yourself. This will allow you to read the true RPM level of your engine as well as having a shift light blind you saying "shift me you moron" which is always good to do when you are dialing in the exact peak power range of your rpms. Like Saleen Gt mentioned, you want to make peak power in each gear at one specific RPM level and then shift to the next gear - Don't damage your engine when it's not making any more power in the higher rpm's. Now if you had a cobra like mine that is built you don't worry about shifting till 7 grand because the engine is built to make peak power at that range. Now as far as topping out your car in 4th gear past redline...I hear a good engine rebuild goes for about 5-6 grand so just have that set aside if you like to take chances like that. Or you could throw the 5-6 grand on a basketball game and turn it into 10 grand if you win - because either situation you are gambling with your money and/or car.

Yeah a tach looks cool in my opinion and honestly if you are going around driving worrying about redlining - it's a no brainer. I haven't installed my new one but I will go ahead and tell you that it's better than the $200 autometer's as far as features, and it cost me about $60 if I recall. Pretty simple to install, you just have to have a good sense about splicing wires and/or knowing which wires need to connect to get it to work. I had a phantom in my old saleen which is about $200 and I can already tell you the cheaper one I just bought is going to be much more value!

As to your comment of "not hurting anything" I would not go that far...the more you beat on your engine the more you are likely to break stuff. One little hiccup when you are getting into those high rpm's and you might be sorry...

I shift mine everyday at 6300-6400. It pulls strong to 6200, then the extra couple 100 RPM over the 6200 set up the next gear to be deeper into the power curve. I have the rev limiter set at exactly 6400. I have hit the revlimiter pretty hard before at the top of 2nd gear and tagged a few plugs with the piston, but nothing ever got hurt. I even looked into the cylinder with a bore scope and there was just a TINY little mark on the top of the piston.

Over 5k RPM's, my stock tach reads about 300 RPM higher than my Autometer. I know my Autometer is more accurate because I can hit recall on it after hitting the limiter and it shows exactly 6400.

As long as you let off as soon as you hit the limiter, you will normally be fine.

Yeah...whats so funny? Doesn't a Vette go faster in fifth since sixth is the economy gear...not enough power to push the car over 180 in sixth when the revs drop from fifth?

I've had my GT conv to 128 with the top down in fourth. With the wind drag, I wonder if fifth will maintain speed with my stock 3.27 rear end. Would have hit top speed, whatever it is, but an Escalade towing a new '06 Z06 pulled into the left lane! Gotta love M-14 out west of Detroit.

I hit mine the other day and blew out 5th gear... Be careful!

j/k, it wasn't from hitting the limiter

Yeah and I pinned the speedo in my GT. What a stupid move. There is no reason to ever go that fast on the highway. You're just asking for trouble.
