I might put that engine back together with all the parts you already have. Cam, intake, heads, the whole nine yards. Don't upgrade a thing. But...


Spend your money on a blower that will wake the thing up and is also suitable for your [next] build. Maybe you run 8 to 10 lbs now and add an intercooler kit with a new engine combo later.

The cool part is you can keep your SD EEC for now, upgrade your fuel pump and add an FMU.

You would be well over 300 HP [At The Wheel] while you take your sweet time with an engine build. 8oz
This crossed my mind also but I think my next build would be a naturally aspirated big inch Windsor. That is the reason I was thinking 185 or 190cc heads but that might not even be big enough for a 408W.
 
Shiiiiiit man those heads will choke a healthy 408. You need either AFR 205’s or the TFS 11R 205’s. You put a good solid roller in it and 225’s would be more than likely.

I was hoping maybe 185s / 190s would be a good compromise for both engines but doesn't seem like a good choice. I would love to have 205 or 225s on a 408.

My neighbor at work is a pretty dang good engine builder so I probably would build one with him.

A pretty decent '93 with a 347 popped up for sale I was thinking of looking at but I think I am leaning towards just building this one up in the future. The car was pretty stock when I bought it and people have told me to keep it close to stock but I don't think long term I would be happy with something pretty close to stock. Decisions decisions.......... :O_o:

I do appreciate the opinions from everyone who replied. Definitely a few good options to think on.

I’m MAF, so not sure how much of a difference it is, but I have a Novi1220SL on a completely stock long block including throttle body running only 4-6lbs of boost and it actually feels pretty solid once you get past 3k rpm’s. I do have full exhaust (but with a catted Magnaflow mid pipe) and 3.31 gears.

That could be another option like Noobz suggested. If you went with even more boost like he said, it would only be more fun.
Another good option. I have an '07 GT500 and hadn't thought too much about putting boost on this car but it's worth considering because I do like the idea of putting it back together mostly stock with a blower, have fun with that combo for a while and then upgrading it more at a later date and time.

I have decided to just leave the engine mostly stock and hold off on doing H, C, I for now until I get some of the other things on my list checked off. At the moment I am going to put on the parts that I currently have: O/R mid-pipe, 2.5" flow tubes, 2.5" tail pipes, 3.73 gear, and the Cobra intake.

My current question is, since I'm doing the Cobra intake, is it worth putting on a 96-97 Explorer 65mm throttle body? I've seen people say there is no power to be gained and others says 10-15 hp. What do you guys think?

Also, I'm deleting the smog and EGR. I bought the plugs from LMR that go in the back of the heads. Do I need any type of block off plate or spacer when using the Cobra intake? Is there anything else I need to complete the EGR and smog delete besides the shorter belt?

The 93 Cobra and Ford Explorer came with 65mm TB's. The opening on the intake is 65-70mm or so, so the TB matched better. Certainly ford had a reason to go with that TB instead of the 58mm on the standard 5.0's as the intake and GT40 heads do offer more flow than stock stuff.

I don't know if it's 10-15HP though. Stock heads will only give you so much.

I did a 93 cobra intake and 65mm TB on my stock engine years ago and clearly remember a nice gain over 3500RPM.
 
Ahhh, I didn't know the throttle body opening on the Cobra intake was 65-70mm but that would make sense for it to be larger than the 5.0 HO intake.

I thought the 10-15 hp seemed like a stretch but I do think there is some power to be had since you mentioned the GT 40 cars and Explorers came factory with the 65mm throttle bodies.

I think I will go ahead and order the 65mm Explorer throttle body I was looking at. It's good to hear you remember a nice gain over 3500 RPM when you did a Cobra intake and 65mm TB on your stock engine. I'm looking to pick up a little power here and there, like this throttle body, until I get around to doing the H, C, I.
 
Just be mindful that the TB needs to be modified to work on a Fox. Early TB's are easier to swap than the later years

I recenlty watched one of NeoMustang's videos on the throttle body swap. He explains that it's not a direct bolt-on and the early Explorer throttle bodies are the ones to go with. I appreciate the thread link you provided; I will reference it when I do the swap.
 
67mm opening on my explorer intake. Need an egr delete plate. Some folks use jb weld to plug holes. That's how mine was done on my 92 when I bought it. I didn't like the big egr spacer so I got rid of it. Had to use a spacer between upper and lower intake though as the throttle cable was thwarted by the coolant tube. Does clean up the look a bit though.

Also, the bigger throttle body isn't gonna do squat if you keep the egr spacer. Gonna bottleneck your air.

No EGR spacer on the Cobra intake.
 
1:) Just need gaskets and hardware. The upper intake uses different bolts to connect to the lower. You will also need bolts for the TB as it doesn't use studs like the stock intake. Also, the vac hose configuration is also different. You will need to take the metal vac tube off the stock intake if it isn't on the cobra intake. Vac lines will route like this

The molded PCV vacuum lines are different than the stuff on the regular HO intake. Will the Explorer GT40 upper intake have the correct molded vacuum lines? If not, what is the best course of action to get the needed vacuum lines?
