I was wondering how I could convert my 289 to a serpentine belt. i only would have the crank,w/p, and alt.. Can i get parts of a different car or do I have to get a kit? It would look alot better to me especially if I could get some polished pullies.

With just an alt, and no AC or PS, why would you even need to? it's a PITA because all the factory serpintine stuff is 4 bolt pulleys, and earlier than 71, they were all 3-bolt

I have the march stuff but you would need a new, damper....I think. I know it wouldn't work with the one I had for some reason. They polish up real good, I got the ultras...

I do hate that the chebys are cheaper...doesn't cost them anymore to make the fords! crapola

March sells a kit for your small block with all polished aluminum pulleys.
Beter have about $500.00 of cold cash.
If you drive a chevy then its about $200 less,,, fricken ripoff crapola

I looked into this setup by March and it requires changing to an electric fuel pump instead of the mechanical due to an interferance problem with the PS pump mount. What's the reason for going serpantine anyway? Are you having belt problems?

It is a 302 but should work with a little tinkering:

or my own, again a 302:

My pulleys are from Summit Racing. A grooved water pump pulley is available from ASP if you go with a standard rotation pump like the one listed in the kit.

whats the point in running serp belts if you're only turning an alternator and w.p. Not really much drag with a V-belt.....I can't understand having underdrive pulleys either on something with so few belt driven accesories. Bragging rights maybe....

I can't understand how four or five punctuation marks in a row end a sentence any differently than one? :)

A serpentine belt system with a tensioner is lower maintenence than a v-belt set-up. Granted that is minor but something none the less. In my case an alternator bracket, pulleys and a belt were cheaper than a alternator bracket, water pump, pulleys, and a belt. I don't plan on bragging about my Mad TyTe, blinging blue underdrive pulleys (according to summit they were supposed to be silver), They were the least expensive that fit the bill.

With so few things being turned it's a worthless expense IMO. It'll cost you an aweful lot of money compared to what you will gain (if there is a gain) in performance. Even if you do get underdrive pulleys, you won't gain very much.

But if you are dead set on doing it, You will need the special crank pulley FRPP makes for 3 bolt cranks like all the 289's had. To avoid that abomination of belt routing that March came up with, you will also need the water pump pulley of a mid '80's Crown/Grand Marquis. It's ribbed instead of smooth like the serpentine belted Mustangs water pump pulley's. Using this water pump pulley will allow you to run the serpentine belt in the same way the current V-belt is run. It's made so the water pump is turned like your current water pump instead of reverse flow like the 5.0.

Basically this will look and function exactly like what you have but instead of a V-belt it'll be a serpentine belt.
