how can i tell if i have an 8.8?

All V8 Mustangs produced from 1985+ have an 8.8 rearend. The 7.5 has a slightly different rearend cover and a slightly smaller pumpkin, but its hard to tell using an unexperienced eye. You can go online and pull up the specs and gasket pattern for any rearend you want from a lot of different sites. Or make a rough trace of your pattern and match it with some gaskets at the parts store.

Not true, I drive an 85 and it had a 7.5 with a 5.0 in it. Check the pumpkin and there should be a tag hangin' on one of the bolts with some numbers. You should see 7 5 L somewhere if it's a 7.5 and 8 8 L somewhere if it's an 8.8 .

Thats why I said 85+. Sorry about the confusion. 1986 is when they went to the 8.8 rearend. I've owned both years.
Normally, I read/write the first year something starts and add the plus; I think he was just confused because 85+ generally includes 85 and all years above.

Everyone seems to know the answer now, so we're good.:SNSign:
