ok so some of you know that i have a bronco 2 with a 5.0 in it. its a car motor and not a truck one ok. so ya know when im at the strip or out on the street i tend to look for other trucks to play with, mainly because its not fair to run a stang or camaro cuz i weigh 1k more lbs, and my truck is a flying brick. but anyways. i have a story and a few questions.

ok so few days ago just cruising around town, lightning is in front of me, never tackled one, (alot of z71's and chevys in general around here so i usually dont see the lightnings) so hes acting like he wants to play. he acts an ass a few times while im thinking this over. so as we are goin out of town he starts to get on it and so do i, ok he busted my ass up to about 70 mph, probabaly pulled a good 5 cars on me, but about that speed is where mine always wakes up. well i start to pull on him and i get up to about his tailgate when he lets out.......so im like **** cuz i was still pullin pretty good. so i was tellin some of my friends up at ford about it expecting them to laugh, and most of them were like "nah, they dont have much top end, but they got killer take off though". ok now these guys are world class BS artists and im not sure if they were yankin my crank. so anyways i see dude in the lightning again up at walmart yesterday and hes all like "you wanna get that ass busted again?" which i was like "you didnt bust my ass and if thats all a blown 5.4 can pull on a stock bottom end 302 then you might wanna go back to ford and pick up an escort so you can save on gas". ok so im pretty pissed about it, not the race but the **** talkin. so what i wanna know is, is it true they have no top end? was that one just slow? was he just a bad driver? have i dug myself a grave now by talkin ****? what can i do to mine to give him an actual run (forced induction AND n/a)? i have access to a bottle, but it cant be a large shot cuz i have hyper pistons, i dont really think i can afford a blower or even a stroker kit at this point. my motor now has all the bolt-ons minus heads (what i have are 40s with mill work and valve work) i have a DOA behind it, but id like to stay auto just for the fact that i hate changing clutches and having to that every once and again is enough to convince me not to have one.

so am i wasting my breath here? do you guys have problems with lightnings?

The guy obviously let off...from 30-100 a Lightning is dang quick...he should have kept pulling on you like he did at the beginning of the race...

And their autos...so driver error is minimized...

well i didnt catch him till about 110, 70 is just where mine comes alive. since i started building on this truck the powerband has really moved up and its gotten to where its quicker at high speeds

so what can i do to catch him sooner, or hell even just run with him? probabaly gonna be a power adder huh?

Looking at your website...you should be able to take one...with a very low 13 second time @ 103 mph...

You only weigh a few hundred pounds more than a mustang...

What are your mods...

If the above times are true...a Lightning will not put 5 cars on you like that no matter how bad "your bottom end power is"...unless it was heavily modded...

Lightnings are quick trucks...

well that was stripped down when i did that. well my friend parker actually made that pass in it. it was pretty much a driver seat and a dash. 3700lbs is about what we thought it weighed when i ran that, with full interior, me, and full tank it clocks in about 4200lbs. i had street tires also which is why i had the bad short time. dont have a torque converter neither, still using stock. which there isnt a stall there at all. traction is a problem at the track for me. and for even that if its under 30mph you can stomp it and it just eats (on the street). mid range is ok, it acts like it has a stuttering problem and then takes off. 65-70+ is where it comes alive. i dunno why. i put a video of it in TALK where i punched it about 80, you can see how it accelerates in that video. i actually think the thread was called "video". it runs low 14s mostly sometimes high 13s with the interior in it, which is 3 extra seats a huge carpet and a big speaker box.

right now, i have ud pullies, mac cai, 77mm pro-m, 65mm tb, gt-40 intake, gt-40 heads (milled .020, 3 angle valve job, 1.6 rollers) e-cam, hooker LT's, h-pipe, dual 40s, aod transgo hp kit, 3.73s out back

if you can explain to me why my truck is like this, id love to know. it sucks in town, cuz like a focus or damn rice burner can kick it next to me and i cant do **** with em for a hundred feet or so, then i pull away. but they of course come away saying that they at least ran with me for a sec or so.....which i hate.

Looking at your time...actually it seems like you must have got a good 60ft considering your weight (even if it was stripped)...

You probably have around 270rwhp...305-315bhp...with those mods...

The reason why your bronco is "staying" with those ricers is because they are light compared to your bronco so therefore can get right beside you until you can get your bronco moving...

Now if there is an actual engine problem...I'm not to get at figuring out what is wrong, especially over the net...

Yeah I remembered your "Video"...I watched it when you first posted it and I watched it on your site...moves pretty good...sounds good to

Good Luck

Get a stall converter and some gears, you need it to pull at 35 like it does at 70.

It is true, Lightning's really lack in the top end, once they hit 4th gear they are hogs. That's why the factory 3:55 gears are really the best option for anyone to run, there is no gain and usually loss in a bump up to 3:73 or 4:10 gears unless you are HIGHLY modified and running a very different than factory combination. As in different tranny or much different motor.

With the 3:55 gears, the L's come close to redlining 3rd and never have to shift into 4th in the 1/4 mile. I'm not sure what the L's usually trap in the 1/4 mile, but if you're talking 70-110mph, if it's mostly stock, then yea, you'd prolly pull him there. They are torque monsters.

Most of those "ricers" that are pulling you are probably stick also, which means they are right where they need to be when racing from a roll. Compared to your automatic.

What rear suspension do you have?
If you can hook, you will run much better.

ive got leafs out back and theyve had their ass whooped. my truck has lost about an inch to an inch and a half in height in the last 6 months. so my springs are starting to sag. i was thinking about a 4-link, something in the form of a parallel style with some coilovers. only thing is i dont know how to buy coilovers. like i dont know what all the numbers and stuff mean. this is my daily driver and i dont want it to ride like a log wagon, but i want it to have some stiff qualities about it. but as for what to get and sizes and stuff im lost as to what im lookin at.

I think you should get differant gears, if you run good in the top end....Well that almost answers your own question. I think a set of 4.10s would help.

ok so how much would that affect me on say MPG'S and RPM and stuff. at 70 i turn about 2400-2500. i drive this thing about 90 mile round trip 3 times a week. i know that it sounds silly for me to say this and driving what i drive, but i dont want to get murdered on gas. now if it were like a mile or 2 loss, no biggie. but if it were to seriouslt alter the mpgs then i dotn want to change.

I think you would benefit alot from a high stall converter.

what size of tires on the back of the truck ? they look fairly tall,
maybe 4.10's will also live'n it up a bit.
and maybe get a custom chip put in there

i agree, switch to some 4.10's. they'll help you get off the line quicker, but they'll raise your rpm's on the highway and you may lose a few miles per gallon though. it's all up to you in what you want for the vehicle. nice bronco btw.

thanx axeman. i can deal with paying at the pump a little sooner if it pays off in the Fun dept. plus my car friends all tell me its all how you drive on the highway that saves gas. like pick a speed and stay there.

the tires are 245/40-17s they are about 24.5" tall

I have to agree with the gears or to pitch the God aweful AOD. A 26" tire should be fine with the 3.73's, taller and you'll want 4.10's
