So i have narrowed an ignition problem to the pickup in the distributor most likely. So im thinking i might as well get a new distributor. How do i change them out. I know you mark the old one so you know where you took it out from. But how do you know where to but the new one back in?? I dont want to take it to a mechanic again. Please help.

You need to find TDC then mark your Dist housing and the rotor. Then you can pull it right out and slide in the new one.
check the repair manual. take it to TDC on compression stroke, mark the relative location of the dizzy (back up) and pull it. put the new one in with the rotor in the same position and then start it, warm it up, pull spout, and time it.
