How do I change the Oil Pump Drive Shaft

naw. It can be done in minutes. Pull the dizzy out with a slant and it should come out, or if it doesnt. Just pull the dizzy and get one of them atenna thingys with a magnet at the end and stick it to the DS and it will come right out!

There is supposed to be a round clip under the piece that you see when you look into the hole when you pull the dizzy out. It is to hold the shaft from coming out when you pull the dizzy. If the engine has not been torn down, or was done by someone being carfull, it will be still there. I have used large tipped angle snap ring pliers to hold the clip, and pull a shaft, and slide another into it while still holding it. Best done with 2 people. If the clip is dropped, it could do damage if not retrived.

Yea,the metal snap ring will keep it from pulling through.

Tyr what 393Bird said, and if you can get the too work. Then you'll have to jack the motor up,un-blot the pan, then oil pump and pull it out through the bottom. There should be enough room to do that with out actualy pulling the motor.

dont just drop it in from the dizzy...........completely a dumbarse way to do it. the person before me did that and when i pulled my dizzy the shaft fell on the crank and didnt know it. I couldnt figure out y i didnt have oil press for the longest time luckly it didnt bust my oil pan. it was just laying there bent and a 90 degree angle and twisted.

When i changed mine i undid the engine mounts and complete lifted the front of the egine until it would go any father. unbolt the oil pan(drian oil first of course) pan still wont come all the way out cause the K-member. then unbolt the oil pump so u can put in the new shaft(i didnt have to remove the old one, pretty sure u can pull it out from the bottm. .make sure u get it in right by checked from the dizzy hole(pointed end should be up so u can stab the dizzy)then bolt the oil pump back up. bolt the oil pan up. drop the engine back down(make sure its lined up) and bolt the engine back. And walla ur done(except for putting the dixxy and oil back in)

The clip is on the shaft for a reason so do it the right way and it will save the head ache of have to do it over!!!:nice:

Ive done it both ways, in the car on with the engine out. Its best done from the bottom. If you lose the clip in the engine it most likely will tear up something, and the pump shaft will come out every time you pull the dist, or will come out of the pump and fall in the pan.

I prefer and recommend taking the engine out. That way you have a much better chance of getting the gaskets to seal.
