How do I change the Start up's with XP?

I can't remember how to change what programs start when I turn my PC on. AIM starts as soon as my computer is turned on. Its annoying me.

Start - Run - Type "Msconfig" (without the quotes) - go to the last tab labeled "Startup" and you'll see checkboxes, just disable the ones you don't want.

Also in AIMs configuration, you can disable 'run at start up'.

I agree that msconfig is the fastest route. Just record what boxes you uncheck, so that if something doesn't work when you restart your computer you can reverse what you did.

There's also other ways... But that involves getting into regedit...

...And to explain that.. argh.

I would never send a novice into the registry. It is way too easy to totally FUBAR your computer in the registry. msconfig should get the jo done.

Spybot also lets you change the startup items just like msconfig. This works great for Win 2K since it doesn't have msconfig.

You might also disable some other not-so-commonly-used Programs in the Startup panel of MSCONFIG as well to increase performance upon OS load. Just FYI.

I got rid of 8 start up's that I don't use or would rather manually start (MS Messenger, Quicktime, AIM, etc.). It saves on boot time as well.

Anywhere i can learn about regedit? I've been into computers for a long time...more so the hardware rather than software part of it. But im always looking for more knowledge

Download a program called Virtual PC by microsoft.. It allows you to emulate another OS on your desktop. Install WinXP and **** around with regedit without worrying about breaking anything..cuz' if you do you can just reinstall without messing up your real computer.

I didn't know that .... that's awesome. I've messed around with the registry quite a few times (on a few different computers). I have to say, there are ALOT of things in there that can screw your computer up FOR GOOD. Luckily, I've never messed with those things.

BTW .... where can you find the "HKLM" stuff in the registry? I need to edit some stuff in there .... just can't find it.

Asking a question is never dumb. I'm sure there are some things you could tell me that you think are common knowledge, but would be new to me.
