how do I get my center section out of my 9"

This is my first time dealing with a rearend.

Its out of a 69mach I. How do I get the center section out?

You're joking right?

Loosen the 4 flange nuts behind the rear brakes and pull the axle out a couple of inches. Do that to both sides. Loosen the nuts holding the differential in and pull it out... simple!

Also, when taking the driveshaft off don't let the end caps fall off of the U-joint. This is where the two U-bolts hold the driveshaft to the yoke of the center section. My axles came out by hand but if they are stuck you will need a slide hammer.

There may also be copper washer under the nuts on the center section. They can be a real pain to get off. Have a good drain pan underneath to catch all the smelly stuff also. Its heavy, so watch out when it does come out.

If you don't have a slide hammer, turn the drum around, slide it on the lug nuts, put a couple of nuts on and jerk.

i see the 4 bolts i need to loosen on either side. The rear was rebuilt, so hopefully the axels will slide, if not, thanks for the tip on the drum.

I will get to it tomorrow.

Once you loosen the nuts, they'll slide right out... Just be sure to have the housing stable when you pull out the differential, else it might flip over on your foot..

One more thing...don't forget to add the friction modifier when you put it all back together.

OK, I unbolted four nuts on one side of the rearend. The brakes are just kind of hanging there. I removed the studs that went through the brakes that I removed thenuts from. I have tried pulling the axle out and its not budging. I put the drum on backwards and pulled and turned...nothing, tried tapping it with a hammer....nothing.

Is there something else that im missing? do i have to unbolt both sides before anything will move?

There are just 4 nuts you take off on each side, they are on the backside. The only thing you do with your brakes is take the drum off, to get to the nuts you dont even have to take the drum off. A flat plate with a notch in it comes lose at the same time. Have you losened the right thing?

OOPS, NO. The stud sticks through from the back. You DO have to take the drum off to get to the nuts. There should be one hole in the end of the axle to line up on each of the nuts to get a socket on them. If no hole then you have to get a wrench behind the axle. Sorry!

thats what i did...wrench behind the axle and tookthose off...still no dice

you will probable have to pry the piss out of the axles to get them out.and the copper washers holding the chunk on will have to be cut off with a chisle

Start early in the morning with a bowl of wheaties, if that doesn't work, try some spinach for lunch...

Shane you seem to have your hands full with this rearend! I hope somebody didn't weld the bearing into the race... Alot of the old drag racers did this. Get a slide-hammer..

Oh yea...be sure the axles still turn free and aren't wedged in from trying to get the differential out first. You may have gotten things bound up a little.

dont forget to drain your housing. and check your seals, you might want to replace the seals while its apart

If you won't spring for a axle puller,
put the drums on backwards with the lugs on backwards alittle over halfway.

Use the drum as a slide hammer and pop the axles out.
Take care not the drop the axle on the outer tube seal or you will bend it and it WILL LEAK.
remove driveshaft and wrap tape around ujoint caps to hold in place.
remove center nuts and washers and pull center section out straight.
it has a machined mating shoulder that is in the housing aprox 1/2 in.
A flat prybar can be used to move it out, do not scare the gasket surface.
