How do you know when your belt tensioner is shot?

Exactly what it says guys...just wondering how you know when the belt tensioner gives. Will it not give "tension" ? Anyone have theirs go out? What did it do when it did?

you will probly see rubber dust on stuff... mine is so loose it makes a knocking sound because its bouncing back and forth a bit and hitting something

Hmmm i think mine is gone then. I have rubber dust on things and it wasnt knocking that stop....but now it is. $55 life time warranty from murrays here i come.

you can always check your belt tension..

belt tension has dropped. Thats what made me ask. I never noticed the tensioner before...but that thing is freaking moving back and forth fast as h3ll. And it smacks that "stop" to make that chattering sound. I have tried different belt sizes too....
