How hot is too hot?

Driving home today I was getting on it quite a bit, and on one 100mph blast the temp quickly climbed from 210 to 225 or so. :eek: I immediately checked my rear view for steam (that's how hot it was last time I blew a head gasket) but didn't see any, and it drove just fine the rest of the way home. But isn't 225 pushing it? That seems really hot to me. I am running the stock radiator and waterpump, so it's understandable that it runs that hot, but still.

When I got home I checked my header to see if my EGR cap was still on the bung (the penny I had on there had melted and fallen through the other day, so I put two pennies on and tightened the nut down over them, lol) and the pennies and nut were all completely gone. I had a big ass exhaust leak there, venting 600* fumes directly in the engine bay. That may be part of the reason it heated up so fast. While I'm on this subject, what size nut do I need to cap off that EGR bung? I know there's threads on it, but what the hell, humor me huh?

Anyway, it seemed to be running pretty hot (may just be from the exhaust leak) but I was wondering what you guys think is too hot. Any ideas?
 
Did you change the fan temps on your tweecer? The stock high speed doesnt even turn on till 220 degrees, i think the low speed is 210 or so. I dont think its too hot, but i would keep an eye on it. Mine usually runs round 185-192 on my autometer. But in the hotter days like today(90) it gets to around 200 if i do a WOT run.
 
Hit up a Home Depot....The rounded cap on the Left...5/8" I think...Look for the Blue colored bag....Douche both pcs good with Anti-seize...

WhiteDevil, yea I set my fan temps, low speed on at 188 off at 183, high speed on at 196 off at 190. The other day I drove for an hour on the highway at a constant speed of 80+mph and it got up to 195 and then VERY VERY slowly climbed to 208 or so. When I say slowly, I mean it took 45 minutes to climb another 10* or so. I really think that EGR bung being open has got to be the reason it got so hot. 600* exhaust gases being vented right at the engine CAN'T be good, lol. And it only happened when I got up to 6000 rpms so that makes sense, more rpms, more exhaust gases.

95, I found an old thread about EGR delete, and found the size nut I need. But I need it quick, so I asked my old man to pick it up from the hardware store on the way home. I can't be driving around with an open EGR bung for a week or so. lol

:hail2: I found an older thread with those pics in it just a little while ago. I asked my dad to pick me up one on the way home, hopefully he'll remember.
 
Chris, see how it does, but I have the feeling that you will want a new radiator, like John said.

It is not like you live in the tundra - with that combo and alum heads, I would not want to push it too much.

My one thought: Are you sure your lower radiator hose is not collapsing? There is a spring inside it? Otherwise, that 6K blast could have closed off the hose.

Nope, lower hose is still good, the spring was still inside it when I replaced the head gaskets. As long as it stays 210 or below once I get that header capped off, then I can put off a new radiator for a while. I don't have $400 for a radiator right now.
 
:notnice: my car overheated the other day and i had no temp gauge hooked up. The engine started smoking so i turned off the car and said $hit! Some guy drove by, asked if i need any help. I said yeah and he towed my car home for me. I went out (next day)and bought a temp gauge, hooked it up and went around the block once. When i got home the car was at 260*!!! I replaced the thermostat and that fixed it. do you think anything else might be wrong with my car from getting so hot? :shrug:

Holy Shiite!! 260*?! Might wanna do a compression test to see if your head gaskets have blown.

Nothing to worry bout Thermostat locked up on my cobra a few years ago my car got up to 270 blew the lower rad. hose off them shot all the coolant everywhere. Refilled the rad. and babied it home which took over an hour cause of having to stop and let the car cool. I replaced my stat and everything was fine. My car has a stock style stat back in it now and does get a lil warm but the overheating doesnt seem to have effected it at all.

chris next thing on my list of parts to buy would be a fluidyne. Those things are amazing quality and do the job and then some. I know before i do any head swap to mine ill get one.

If your running a/c i suggest deleting it and getting rid of the condensor infront of the rad, deffinatly helps bring temps down.

im using the penny trick too! im hoping i dont melt though it though too!

Did you notice where I live? :rolleyes: I gotta keep my a/c.

Chris, I will definitely get one soon. But first I need a wideband and a fuel pump.

:bang: No, and as I was typing that earlier I thought "plumbing" for some reason, lol. Looks like I'll be making another stop on the way home. Andy could you still chime in and verify you bought your nuts in the plumbing section? ;)
