Yes, less turning of the steering wheel. But you must remember, the quicker the ratio, the more effort to turn w/ manual steering.

As far as belts go, you can just run the shorter belt.

The best way to measure belt length with a string and buy that length belt for a K6 belt. (K6= number of ribs)

As these guys said, it's an easy job. You'll have to remove the tie-rod ends from the spindles, which required a simple puller ($12 at Murrays, CarQuest or Autozone) or you could beat on the top of the threads after you remove the nuts (don't recommend, but it will work in a pinch).

For future reference:
Leave the nut on 2-3 threads before you beat on the rod ends with a hammer. Not doing this has a high likelyhood of damaging the threads. I know you have to change the tie rods with the 79-81 rack but just don't want someone to read this and beat up the threads on a part they are gonna re-use. Not just in the tie rod threads case here but, use this method in general.
