i was quoted $3500 for metal replacement, body work, basecoat/clearcoat....

shop around...but 5k probably really isnt that bad either....prob. better prep quality....

Of course price varies depending on location and other factors....but for comparisons sake...

My dad's '70 camaro was painted recently for $6,000. This however included plenty of rust repair and the installation + alignment of many replacement panels (new quaters, front fenders, hood, rear spoiler) + painted stripes. From what I saw it was a high quality paint job that could proudly be shown at shows.

From what you described I would say that you could def. get it done for $5,000 and probably even a lil' less while still being very happy with the job

Body work and other prep depends on what's needed. When shopping around for my car I was quoted between $5000-$8000 for what I wanted. Which did include a fair amount of rust repair.

I feel that you can spend any amount you want on paint work, but how much can you afford? I did my '68 myself, and although I haven't added up the receipts, I'd say I have around $2000 in materials alone. Several years ago, a freind painted my '88 single stage acrylic enamel for $800 and it still looks nice for a driver. At the other end of the spectrum, a freind had his '67 coupe painted by a local custom shop and it cost $17K. My point is, decide beforehand what you can afford and try to get the best job you can for that money. For instance, if you have $5000 to spend on paint, ask how much you would save if you took out the interior yourself, or if you removed the windows, or stripped the car yourself. By offering to do some of the grunt work, you can likely get a much nicer job for your money, regardless of what you have to spend.
