....well, I have the chasis of 85 #0140 waiting for restoration and a lot of TLC. She looked amazing before the fire. If all goes well, the work will begin in November after my honeymoon.....

Hello. I have #86-012. Early production '86 with the '85 ground effects, early 4-spoke Wolf steering wheel and 15" Hayashi wheels. I removed the wheels in favor of some Work 3-piece 17" wheels. Black w/gray interior, 5-speed. Currently bone-stock (right down to the air intake silencer).

I own 85-49. White/blue/blue. Known to be the 23rd Saleen built.

Factory T-top, early 84 fiberglass ground effect car with the "BIGWING". Only non-stock items are CD player and 16" Episilon silver back wheels (have the original gold Hayashi's in storage.

Like Robert and Marcus I own a Fox Body in need Restoration! I own one of the last 86's #198 which is a Black with Grey Graphics Saleen Hatchback! When she was running she was a srong runner with a few tasteful mods and I loved driving her around Willow Springs Raceway! Some Day, I'll bring her back to the condition she deserves to be in!

If memory serves, the early cars (except for 1984) started at the number 7 and they were known to skip a few numbers along the way.

That's a good looking 4 eye.
I just think it needs some real saleen rims. I don't think the model or the year of the rims matters, just something saleen specific. The set of 1990 black ARE 5 spokes i sold a few months back would of been perfect.

Hey Stangfan. Did you replace the body kit on that car? That early of a production number should have the 85 air dam on it but it has the 86. Looks damn sweet though!

In the early days, Steve was just trying to sell cars. Most people were able to choose their number if it was still available. Cars with the number of 10 or less were held in reserve for financial backers, business associates, and Steve himself.

However, I'm a 2-time 4-eyed owner. 85-0007 and 85-0109. 85-0007 (grey) has many '84 parts such as the front air dam and rear wing. Notice the difference in these photos. The grey car is what we refer to as "The Big Wing"!

Stangfan - The front air dam is an '86. Notice the difference in my previous posting. If your car has rear spats instead of a full wrap around valence, then that is from '85.

Don't worry Ted, still in good hands. I just got all new AC lines and comprssor for the car, and am going to be redoing the car starting this winter. It's taking me a little longer then I thought, bought a house last year and it's been taking up a lot of time, but it's coming along. Took it to the track last year just for fun, and it ran a 14.89@99 MPH. Love driving that car, lots of fun and looks everytime it's out.

Cool, good to hear it's still in good hands. If it's ever looking for another home,
give me a shout. I may have room for a few more in a couple of weeks.

The replacement was just painted a couple of weeks ago, finally starting to look like
a real car instead of a pile of boxes

23rd ????

Here's the #49 story in a nutshell................

Ordered by Universal Ford in Richmond Virginia, Ford 999 history report shows the car built on 12/01/85. Then the car was sent to Cars & Concepts to have T-tops installed, during this period C&C was on strike and was conversion delayed and held until settlement.

#49 must have been assigned a Saleen serial number before arriving at Saleen, built by Saleen on 03/06/05 and shipped to Universal Ford that same day of build. Our guess is that Saleen conversion parts were held together until build explaining why #49 was shipped with the "84 style fiberglass front air dam and bigwing rear spoiler.

I have talked with the original owner Don Coe and his wife explained that on ice/snow the car slid into a curb and broke fiberglass and bent a Hayashi wheel, Universal got replacement parts from Saleen but by then the front air dams were urathane (sp). The second owner (Butch Nance) owned a automitive shop and maintained the car from when it was new, traded another car (Buick) for #49 in 1989. 2nd owner put car in storage after selling his shop and retiring to Florida. He stated that "the car rode too rough for him" at that time so in storage in went. #49 was put on eBay and was a no sale on January 30 2002, I made an offer to Butch for #49 after the eBay no-sale and it wasn't enough. I looked for another white '85 or '86 Saleen until December 24 2002 when a deal was struck with Greg Wackett to buy the car for what was actually less than I had offered in January. Restoration started in Febuary 2003 and completed in April 2003 just two days before its first show where it was driven aprox 200 miles and placed first.

The car has rear spats rather than the full wrap around rear valance. The front air dam may have been replaced by the original owner (probably came too close to a parking curb and shattered the original one). It is an early '86 air dam (non-functional side vents, functional center). But, talking to previous owners, as far as they know, the air dam had not been replaced. It also does not have the rear "third-eye" brake light which I know was mandated in '86 and Saleen could not ship cars without it.

I think some of the early stuff is still a mystery quite frankly. My car (#46) is listed in the Saleen Book as being one of the first to receive the 86 ground effects but I have seen a few others that conflict with that a little. I think it was a matter of what they had on the shelf at the time is what the car received.

Gary, I see your car is a T-top car but is not listed as such in the Saleen Registry. It may further help explain your theory about the numbers being assigned prior to the car being built and may have been somewhat documented before they had the car onsite. Beautiful car by the way!
