Im doing a cam soon and when I do it I'll have Edelbrock Heads, 1.90/1.60, Powerdyne Bd11a 9lbs., 75mm Mass air and 30lb injectors, Cobra Intake and all the bolt ons. Im stumped between the B cam and the E cam, i dunno what to get. Now I know these are the best all around cams out there so Im not looking for that I just wanna know if the E cam is that much better than the B cam. I have 1.7 rockers so piston to valve clearence is something that ive been looking into. With an B cam and the 1.7s Id have .510 of lift which is pretty equals out to an e cam but with a longer duration. With an ecam and the 1.7s Id have .528 of lift. Pretty much Im asking how much more would an E cam help me rather than a B cam?

Apples to oranges.... E is more streetable, better for blowers, more lift less duration, better for stock-stalled auto transmissions. B is higher rpm, more duration less lift, better for N/A, probably makes more peak power, rougher idle, needs a 5-speed or a mild stall converter.

For your combo, I'd go with the B. The 1.7 rockers will make up for the lift and you'll have a pretty stout little camshaft, and you have a 5spd so converter wont be a concern.

I'm not that up to speed with cam tech but wouldn't more lift be better for higher RPM?

Yes but thats not the only variable. LOTS of things to keep in mind...the lift, the duration, the lobe separation angle, the ramp-rate on the cam, the overlap.....

More duration will make the cam idle rougher and perform better in higher rpms....lift will make it perform better in higher rpms also but not really affect the idle quality. Also LSA has a big effect on idle, a tight LSA can make a small cam behave big, and transversely a wide LSA can make a bigger cam behave smaller and more computer friendly.....

The E-cam is more streetable largely due to its lower duration and wide LSA (114 IIRC). The B cam has a good bit more duration and Im pretty sure it has a tighter LSA (110 or 112 IIRC)

Im not trying to sound like a total expert here, and there's WAY more left on the table as far as cam design, but that's some basics... And just look up opinions on the B cam from experts, then on the E-cam, theyre very easy to find....hell I believe this website has reviews even, you'll find the B is listed as rougher idle and higher powerband, where the E is listed for smoother idle and streetability as well as being a good entry-level blower cam

Not for nothing but id pick neither. Get a tfs stage 1 cam. Its even cheaper then both the b and e cam. those cams are outdated technology. the tfs stage 1 makes more power.

+1 The ford cams are way outdated, you can do so much better! Go custom or a company like Comp, Crane, TFS, etc.

whats the deal with ford cams being outdated and getting the shaft. Sure they are old, but they perform great and people still use them today after like 20 years of being out there. u can grab an alphabet cam CHEAP they are great buys!

They definitely get the job done, but there are better options out there. I think a lot of their popularity is from their price, availability, the fact that EVERYBODY knows what a B, E, F, Z, X, cam is....and you can find them in good used shape for next to nothing all day long. I ran an E once, wasnt disappointed in it but I knew I was leaving a few ponies on the table too

This thinking is why poor 5.0 guys getting their confidence built up from these boards go out to the local races looking to pick on some bo bo LS1 which in turn proceeds to rape them. Then they get back on here wondering why they lost to a mullet car with headers.

Funny how you go to the LS1 boards and they are ALWAYS changing stuff with cams and stuff and always making more power, yet the average 5.0 guy is content with running an old school cam, making 260-280 rwhp (not all but average) and being content just before "it was more than stock".

+1 that's why I'm so sick of everyone talking about the ford cams for the same price or more you can get a much better cam! I don't understand

i chose a B-cam because i got it in a deal for a GREAT price, plus it was more than enough for my thumper and tmoss combo. i dont care what some joe schmoe in his ls1 runs or how fast, i work on my car for my own enjoyment and i know what i can and cant beat. i rebuilt my engine with this cam and stuff for simply a nice street car that has some get up... i'm not all balls racing guy looking for every ounce of power.

sure i could have went and bought a nicer grind like TFS stage 1 or something, but i already had one to suit my needs. so why bother. it would have made maybe a 10 hp difference which wouldnt have been felt anyways.

plus i dont see whats wrong with my way of thinking, i just commented on there are other cams out there that are easier and alot of times cheaper to grab a hold of. i wasnt putting down the good cams or anything.

if the FRPP cams were THAT bad then they would be long gone and ancient history but a good portion of 5.0s still utilize alphabet cams. i dont see whats wrong with it....
