How much is an engine rebuild?

I have a 92 5.0 .030 over to a 306 with TRW pistons and the mods in the signature. Main concern is piston rings, I get smoke after hard driving.
How much should an engine rebuild cost? Might have to go with .040 overbore to a 308.
BTW The engine would still be in the car so the rebuilder would have to pull it himself.

have you done a compression test??? if not do so, oil could be entering from other places e.g.r., intake ect....post results....

I will be doing that next as I just finished doing my lower intake and PCV oil seperator with no results. Still smoking. I will post my compression which I'm pretty sure is bad somewhere. I just want to get an idea for now.

basic rebuilds for a long block, assuming you pull it and put it back in, will be in the $1500 range. but i figure if youre in it that far, why not spend a few hundred extra and make a 331/347? pistons may cost another $100-150 for mid grade units, and a crank will be $200+ if you shop around (eagle had some listed in their 'cosmetic defect' category for $150 last month on their website). and youll save $100 on required machine work of your old crank. why not?
