How much play in ring and pinion

I just changed my u-joints the other day, and i noticed with the tranny in gear, and the parking brake on i could wiggle the d/s about 3/8 to nearly 1/2 an inch. Is that too much? It seems like a lot to me. It doesn't make any noise as far as i can tell so i am not too worried just curious really.

That does sound like a lot, with my rebuilt 3:73 rear end i can move the pinion shaft of the rear end maybe 1/8." (i think it's refered to as back lash?)

Nah, I dont think that sounds too bad. Mine moved about the same. It just seems like alot more than it is. I wouldnt worry about it unless you are hearing nasty noises.
