I've never been impressed with the AODE. It's not slipping, but it definately doesn't shift at the best times.

I have a friend that did a 5-spd swap a couple years ago on his nephew's 2000 GT, so he's got the 18k-mile 4r70w laying around and would let me have it for around $300.
I know I'd need the V6 bellhousing and have a chip burned. But what else is all involved? All the info I can find is about V6 4R70W's, not GT ones.
Obviously I'm considering it because of the price; and even if the chip and everything else brings it to the price of building up the AODE, it is the better tranny.

You can get a chip burned to change the shift points now........mine is a lot better since the tune......Don did tell me that if it ever "goes" then I should look into teh 4R70W........I don't "think" it is difficult to put in.....Maybe Don will be in on this....I think he has one in his Vert.

The 4R70W I got from Don has the "J-mod" (shift kit and lubing mods). I've also got a custom Edge convertor and using my twEECer to control shift points/lockup. The tranny is great - performs amazing at the track and I love daily driving it. Also good peace of mind knowing that it's held up behind a 'vert running 10s.

The link to Don's site above can answer all your questions about what is involved.

I think Don once mentioned that his son Rob wanted a Tremec, hence the swap. I'd have loved to grab-up Don's trans - Wes did good.

As far as other resources, I seem to recall that Mike (Oink) has posted up some good info on the wide gear set swaps and all that. Otherwise, I'm of no help.

Good luck.

EDIT: Wes posted while I was letting the animals out and pecking.

I have also heard that the 70 and 75's internals will swap into the AODE case making some kind of hybrid trans...or a 70/75 that will bolt up/swap to a 5.0 with ease

Well, the vert isn't mine anymore - but I can't change my sig because everyone knows it. I gave the vert to my son and partner Rob when he Graduated from Ohio State last summer as a graduation gift - as you can see, I'm a great dad. Rob wanted a manual tranny in it (he wanted to go slower LOL!) so he swapped to a TKO 600 with a McLeod multi disk clutch. And we had the 4R70W gone over and then sold it to Wes. The tranny guys who had it apart did replace the wear parts, but they said it still looked new - and that's with 700+ RWT going through it. So they do hold power.

My 'fun' vehicle is a really clean Gen 1 Turbo Lightning. I LOVE it - not too fast like the vert, but I can beat all those pesky hemi trucks with ease...

Probably the easiest thing to do with a 4R70W from a 4.6 is to swap the internals to your case, and replace the wear parts like clutches - you can also have the driect clutch plate machined 0.1 to add an extra clutch - I beleive ours had that done. It's a lot easier to do it that way than to try to adapt the bell - you'd also have to swap tailhousings. So it's eaier just to gut it and put it all in your case. You will need a chip/tune for the wide ratio gearset too.
