How reliable are Mustang's? (and other questions)...

Hello!

I'm Shawn! And I have a few things I'm curious about the new models stangs that are out now. (05/06 models). I gotta be honest. I'm a chevy guy, been in the family for years like that. Unfortunately though, the Camaro is still in prototype and wont be released for a few more years, about the time im looking to buy my first muscle car. So far, I REALLY like the appearance of the new 05/06 Stangs. Everything else in its price range, doesn't seem to fit the bill for me. I hear it from both sides of the fense, "Don't buy a Ford", or "Fords are awsome" All subjective to ones opinions. In other words, I'd have no problem parking a ford next to my chevy

So I'm curious as to how reliable they have been for folks that own one here. Has it lived up to your expectations The model in question would be a GT Premium, with all the snazzy things for it, sound, cd player etc.

The whole thing im going after is I want to do some travel with the girl, just the two of us, in a car we can have alot of fun in. I'm not lookin to show anyone up or have the badest rod on the street. This also brings up the question of, should I go with manual? or auto?

Welcome to the site! I have a Deluxe GT, not a Premium, but I have about 9k miles on mine and have had no problems in the 9 months I have owned it. There are a few small problems that you can research over in the technical section, but nothing major. I have a manual in my car and I love it, but I have heard that the autos are very nice too. Good luck with your purchasing decisions, and I know you won't regret it.

I think if you did some searches you would find a number of ex gm people now own the new Stang.

I am one of them. Never cared for any Ford until this one. I don't have and 8 for various reasons but have driven them. I expect you would not be disappointed. This is one fun car. If that is what you are looking for then this is the car for you. I have not had a single problem other than know issues.

If your looking for a fine refined touring machine this IS NOT the vehicle you want.

Whats funny is I know a few ex-GM and ex-Ford guys. Bad luck with a car from any company can really alter how someone feels about it. My dad works for a AKW (making tire rims from aluminum). And he had a co worker that bought a Ford (Truck) a few years ago, had a faulty wire, caught fire, and blew up in the parking lot. I think that classifies under 'stuff happens' category.

Any rate, one of my ex-coworkers owned, and still owns a Mustang, I think its a 2000 model, he just loves that thing to bits, I've ridden in it a few times with him, and its pretty nice. I prefer the new front grill over the 99-04 models (think I got the years right).

So whats bad about doing any long travel with one? Is one not comfy for a long period of time?

Oh umm, one more thing, I need to convince my girl bout the stang, shes not a ford fan. Any encouraging words there? heh, not like she has a choice but still

oh no no, its for my personal enjoyment Some travel is just something I'd like to do with it. Im sure if i can handle 5 or 6 hours in my plain jane chevy truck, the $27K stang has to be a little more comfy!!!

You will love it. Mine; 05 GT, redfire, premium upgrade interior, 500 shaker, automatic, 10,800 miles...absolutely NO problems except keeping my foot out of it. When long distance driving...no tired rearend or any body aches...could drive all day and not be tired. Take a test drive, it's the only way you will know for sure, good luck.

I have an '05 GT Premium...got it back in November of '04. Since then I have had very little problems. The only real problems I have had are things that came about b/c mine was one of the first batch producted. TSB's fixed all these problems (i.e. rear end noise, gas tank filling problems) and since then the car has been very reliable knock on wood haha. Anyway, If you were to buy an '05-'06 I am sure you would have a very reliable and fun car. Good luck!

I am a chevy guy also, not an ex. I still love my old muscle cars and still drag race chevys. When it comes to late models I have had 3 mustangs over the camaros. Build quality I think is better with the mustangs. One thing I liked better was the stang felt more like a muscle car where the camaros felt like a ricer. I love my 05 even if it is a V6. I havent had any problems with it or my 99 GT.

05 GT premium (Auto) 19.5kmi, not a single problem. Got the auto because its what was on the lot, and leg problems...no regrets..get it!

My thought on Transmissions is: After i was a Automatic transmission mechanic for several years I am convinced that one must have a large bank account if you plan on keeping an automatic tranny more than 75k to 100k miles. that is life expectancy of a auto tranny.

so the cost of replacing a clutch is much smaller than rebiulding a auto.

I think they usually last pretty long.....especially when well maintained....I had a 1990 GT with 176,000 miles on it all stock except exhaust and when I sold it to another guy it was still running strong

Well it's just a personal preference. I've had both, drove both and I live around Astoria with too many SENIOR drivers and too much BIG TRUCK traffic. They did a 1 day count...900 big rigs came through in one day. I would wear my clutch leg out in no time at all. Not my idea of having fun, I'd rather wear that leg out getting on and off my horses.

Thats kinda what I'm wondering about. Sometimes on the bike dealing with traffic gets REAL old and tiring on the left hand. So would I want to deal with it or not? The manual would be more fun. Auto's seem kinda boring to me hmm

I went with the auto in my 05 because of the 5 speed works so well. My 99 gt was a 5 speed and so was my pickup. I just got tired of the shifting. In a couple of years my wife is going to take over the 05 and i am going to get either a GT,hopefully a 500 or the new challenger when it comes out. Maybe even the new camaro if they change it a lot. Either way they will be a manual.

Over 1 year old, 7K on it. Have the Skipper 500 issues. Had the gas tank issue - fixed but now have the new gas tank issue (sometimes can only get 1/2 tank of gas).

I've driven from the Left Bank to Phoenix, Las Vegas and Palm Springs and have been surprised by the relative comfort of the car.

How reliable are Mustang's?...
