How thick are the 7.5inch axles? (No BS, i measure 5inches)

i'm pretty sure when people say 7.5" axle or 8.8" axle, they are actually referring to the ring gear diameter. The big cog that encircles the differential. Or am I about to learn something new?

I too would love to learn something new. I mean, why would we upgrade axles for strength then ? :/
I have 4.56 gears and will have 2wd in a few days so.. i need to know ! lol
Reson i am not 100% certain is because the car was used and has some 'yard parts on it from various year mustangs.

Really all depends on how much power/ torque you can put to the axle and how much grip your tires have. But many of them have been broken. MANY. Both shafts and ring gears.
As discovered, the ring gear diameter is what is referred to when you hear 7.5", or 8.8. The larger the diameter, the less stress due to mechanical advantage with the larger diameter. You can still shear pinion/ring gear teeth.
Also, the axles on the 7.5" and 8.8 are the same. When people upgrade axles, they usually upgrade from 28 spline to 31 spline count axle shafts. the extra splines help distribute the load to reduce the change of the splines shearing off.
Axle materials also change for strength, but that area you are measuring won't change due to the bearings inside the axle that the shaft needs to slide into
