the car pinged like crazy when I got it. I backed down the timing and it went away. I did the water pump and with everything out of the way I was able to see/clean the timing marks on the pulley. I checked what the timing was actually set to. It was at zero degrees with the Spout disconnected. So I put it at 10 degrees. I ran it, and any throttle is ping ping ping. I removed the spout connector and left it at 10 degrees. It runs just like it did when I had it at zero initial and the spout hooked up.
Two questions- Anyway to test that the computer is actually changing the spout signal? Maybe it's always giving full advance or something.
How do I check for a chip? I know they change the timing curve and require premium gas. I just filled up with premimum and reinstalled the spout jumper, so we'll see if it pings with that. But where do the chips install on these cars. I've located the computer- passenger side kick panel. Do i need to open it up?

REMOVE PASSENGER SIDE KICK PANEL BETWEEN DASH AND FLOOR YOU WILL NEED TO REMOVE COMPUTER BECAUSE CHIP WILL USUALLY BE PLUGED IN TOP (OPPOSITE SIDE OF WIRE HARNESS PLUG IN) OF COMPUTER.

Yeah, you have to take the computer out to see the chip, its on top of the computer as it sits in the kick panel.

If your timing marks dont seem like they are making sense. I would want to be sure the outer ring on the balancer did not slip. If it did, you really could be at 10-14*, but since the outer ring slid, the timing marks will be skewed.

Good luck.
