Are you talking about before hand or after work performed? Before any head work you will just have to line up all the marks and make sure the chains are set properly. That is acheived by making all of you observations and marks before removing anything.
After a cam install or the like you can turn the engine by hand by using a socket and breaker bar with a cheater pipe. Remove the spark plugs and turn the crank. Any resistance and you have issues.
