how to check timing

Ok, i'm changing my timing chain cover gasket due to a leak, and i wanted to check to make sure the chain is still good and that the timing was still good "i've had back firing problems while decelerating" what should i look for?:SNSign:

Cam/valvetrain timing and ignition timing are two separate elements - I'm sure you knew that, but some seem to confuse the two.

You can check the chain spec (it's listed in the manual) while the TC is off.
