Yes, it's okay, but many say it won't last. Mine did. I would start in D. When the trans shifted to 2nd, I ripped it back into 1, (which holds it in 2nd), then when you want it to shift to 3rd, bump it up to D.

My old 91GT with GT40 heads, cam, and intake and 4.10...HAULED BUTT!!!! I beat a mildy modded 99-00 Lightning that way from a few 40-50 rolls. I even ripped it down into 2nd while rolling and that worked good also.

D is 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear.
If you're above a certain speed and drop it into 1, it will shift into second. The transmission will hold second until you shift out of 1.

People say doing the 1-D-1 shift is going to hurt the transmission. I have yet to see any real proof that it is the manual shifting causing the problems. From my experience it is the power and the high engine rpms causing the transmission slipping. I've not read about anyone doing the 1-D-1 while not pushing the car to the limits. Maybe there is no reason to, but if you floor any auto a lot it won't last as long.

I agree about the 1-D-1 shuffle. Ive been doing it forever and nothing bad has come from it, yet. Everyone says not to, but there is no explanation or proof that will ruin your trans.

If you put it in D at 45 it will be in 3rd gear. Depending on rear end gear if you floor it it may down shift to 2nd. As long as you have it in "D" it will not shift to over drive or "OD" If you trans is functioning properly you should be able to floor it and it should down shift on its own.

i poped the cover off my diff and found my gear is a 2.73 and not a 3.08 like i though. with that being said at 45 mph in 3rd i sit at 2k...if i floor it in D if shifts down to 2nd. if im in OD and floor it. it will only shift down to 3rd.

btw...carefully on wet roads ect...i wasnt expecting em to brake lose at 55 on a wet overpass when i got on it.

If you cant get it into 1st the bracket for your shifter cable is bent. It is under the car. Seen that a few differant times.

Ryan you haven't had your car very long. Who knows where it has been. My car went 212k miles before the transmission needed a rebuild.

I called transgo a couple if weeks ago, on a similar topic and the tech there told me to shift this way drop to 1- rev to about 4500-5k up shift to 2nd as soon as it grabs then back down to 1st now your in 3rd then back up to 2nd. thats how he explained it. I was having problems with the shift kit and thats how he said it should be shifted when racing off the line.

i didnt buy the trans. came with the car! the org tans in it slipped really bad, trans was bought in 2004 and never put in (rebuilt jasper tranny) i just swapped them out. when it was put it had around 1,700 on it but sat for some time and i didnt buy it new. with that being said...

yeah its been slipping going in OD since i put it in. what it wont go into 1st idk..like he said maybe the thing is bent, ill check it this weekend...

it still shifts quick and firm so nothing broke. and tranny fluid dont smell burnt and aint dis colored.

but hey if it gose a 5 speed is going in

When I had the AOD it was easy...

Put it in D, floor it, the car would shift (my tranny would basically skip 2nd and go right into 3rd) I would pull it down into 1, where it would drop into second gear, and then for the next shift just slide it into D and finish the "race". It bored me, and never went fast with the auto, even with a converter, gear, tires, etc...

If you're in OD and shift into D it will go into to 3rd gear. If you want to be in 2nd gear, pull it down to 1.

Hold 3rd gear by keeping it in D.

Hold 2nd gear by keeping it in 1.

Just remember if you're slowing down to a stop and you're holding 2nd gear in 1, once you get down to 5 mph or so it shifts into first and your car will jerk. So when you slow down @ about 10mph shift back into D or OD.
