How to get my 289 into the 13s

if its got a 4 barrel carb, I've seen guys dip into the 13's will gears, traction, and good driving. The power is already there, you just have to know how to use it. don't need nitrous, boost, or any of that b.s. to get in the 13's. If you want to be sure, get a performer rpm(or weiand stealth) intake, a 600 holley, headers, and good dual exhaust. Coupled with at least a 3.50 gearset, you'll be in the 13's with some practice driving. Back when my car was stock, it ran a 14.6@94 with a 2barrel 302, stock C4, and 2.80 gears, with one back tire spinning like a mofo.

Wow. That would be cool, very cool. I really don't feel it though. I've got a new B&M kit coming for my slushy C4. If that works out okay, then maybe I can see the 13's.

mathematically speaking, it only takes about 220 hp to accelerate a 3000lb object thru a 1/4 mile in 13.91 seconds. However, just because you have 3000lb car and 220 hp doesn't mean you will run the 1/4 mile in 13.91 seconds. Thats the importance of practice and 'dialing-in' your combo.
 
Well, 220hp at the rear wheel is a lot more than a stock 289/302 produces.

I have owned a number of 302 C4 cars, and never had one even come close to this. Wondering how you pulled this off, especially with those gears. Hell, I was barely able to squeel the tires on most of em.

I work for a book publisher that distributes all the old road test books, and rarely did a 390GT break into the 14s. The 66 289 k motored cars ran about 15.2 and most the 390GTs ran 15.2 to 14.9.

Real interested to learn how you got a 2 barrel stock 302 with complete highway gears to beat all these cars.
 
I can try to find the timeslip if you like...however, I can't vouch for other peoples times or for the magazine articles of the day. I think it was car and driver or something that got a 13.3 out of an '03 cobra, and Evan Smith ran a 12.6. I'm sure there is some driver error in most of the numbers in magazines.

As for the 302, I rebuilt it myself. Here are the specs: .030 over 79 block, hypereutectic pistons giving 9.2:1 compression, bone stock 79 heads(boat anchors), melling rv cam(labled as hi-torque or something, had like .420 lift), 1970 2 barrel intake, autolite 2100 carb, 77 302 exhaust manifolds(slightly better than early log type manifolds), 2 1/4 inch dual exhaust with generic turbo mufflers. Hardly a hot rod, but it ran well.

Just guessing here, but I'd bet your tires were much better than the OE from the magazine tests?
 
I know guys with 289s that run 12s without NOS. One coupe that ran 12.8s had 3000stall, 4.11 gears, Alum. heads with 2.02 intakes, and a .500" cam. 3000 stall is a huge help to a reving engine, especially when the bottom end lacks torque. Even a 2200 stall would help a lot. Getting the right shift kit for a green dot tranny is tricky, so you may want to leave the inside of the trany alone. It took a while before I realized that to control the 2-3 shift, I had to move the shifter back to 'L' :shrug: . Also, gears make a big difference. I run 3.40s and get decent milage on my 300 mile trips to Cal Poly where i go to college. I run at 3400rpm all the way down the freeway at 75mph. Get a well built exhaust system.

Heres what I recommend:
AFR 195cc
2800 stall, though you may want to go higher or lower
a strong cam matched to the stall amount and your compresion
Speed Demon 650cfm
3.50 posi
Performer RPM intake, i think the air gap version might be too tight
NO POINTS IN THE DISTRIBUTOR!
2.5 exhaust with H-pipe, 2 chamber flowmasters

As far as tires go, I cant say what to run, but air down! Not too much though: the sparking traction from aluminum rims, when the tire comes off, is not a fun experiance.

Don't forget that everything inside your car has to be accelerated to 100mph at the end of the track. The less it weighs, the quicker it will be.
