How to measure for gas shocks for the hood

This isn't really Mustang related....sorta. I want'em for the Mustang too but most of the shocks you buy for those come with instructions. I want them for my Merkur. Does anyone know how you're supposed to measure to allow the shock to work without binding up?

how are they being installed? welded on? bolted on? i've had to figure out how to mount shocks a few times, making (large industrial) custom toolboxes. it's kinda tricky and hard to explain how i did it though... do you already have the shocks, cuz that makes it easier

I'm probably going to use Mustang hatch shocks and maybe even the mounts that they use but we'll have to see about how they fit. Otherwise i'll be scrounging the junkyard for some ball attachment brackets that are small enough to work.
