how to remove a 289 flex plate?

I got my 68 289 on a engine stand and I want to break loose the bolts that hold on the flex plate. I tried a 24" breaker bar with no luck. I went out and got an impact wrench, 230 torque, and sockets.

Still no luck. Is there a trick to this or am I just weak? I don't want to round the head so I am afraid to give it everything I got.

any suggestions appreciated.

They shouldn't be THAT hard to get loose. Not all of them. You might soak them a little with penetrating oil, then try again, although on a motor stand, you might not get good enough penetration of the oil. I've had tough ones, but a 6-point socket and breaker bar always gets it done.

A last alternative would be to leave it on until you pull the crank, then you can set it up straight, soak it with penetrating oil from the crank side and try again.

A little heat probably wouldn't help until you get the crank out.

hmm.. i used the 300 pound 6ft guy with a 24" brakers bar and a 175 pound 5'10foot guy oulling the other way with the crank damper bolt. we barely got it off and we were pulling hard. i think my dad almost went into cardiac arrest.

I'm thinking 600 pound gorilla! The crank bolt gave first.

Are you sure you're turning the wrench the right way? I've NEVER had one that was that hard to break loose, and I've had some that had sat out in south Louisiana weather for years. By the way how did you get it on an engine stand with the flexplate attached? Never could do that myself.

You call that weather in South Louisiana?

Now in Minnesota, WE definitely get weather.

I agree with above, just use some penetrating oil and give it a couple days. Hopefully that will help.

Yea, it's weather--- 95 degrees and 100% humidity in the summer. We don't get the cold like y'all up there ( thank GOD) though. 2-3 weeks ago we got 20 inches of rain in less than a week. Sometimes rains once a day. Good for rust.

Hehe, yeah that's nasty weather. We get that same stuff, but only a couple weeks out of the year.

Most of our rain comes in May. We had rain almost every day, but temps were in the 40s, 50s.

well I managed to take pull the motor and heads turning the wrench the right way!

To stop the crank from turning you can also stick a phillips screw driver thru one of the many holes in the flexplate and let it rotate to the point where it's up against the block then try the breaker bar again.
