how to remove paint on exhaust tips?

You will need to put some elbow greas into it though. Automotive paint is pretty tough. If they got alot on it and its not coming off, try heating the tips FROM THE INSIDE (so you dont damage the finish) and see if you can get the paint hot enough to start craking and peeling. And please wait till they cool before you pour xylene on them. That would not be good.

If all else fails, use paint stripper. But use a weak one. I would suggest getting some Super Strip from your local S-W. Make sure you get the paste, its weaker so it wont damage the finish on the tips.
 
You could always try brake fluid. It'll take a bit of "sitting" time, but it'll take the paint right off.

FYI - An old modeler's trick:
Brake fluid is also a great way to remove paint from some types of plastic. The brake fluid attacks the paint without disolving the plastic. (always test first!)
